I once drove to liverpool to collect a gearbox, however when I got there i had to take it out of the car (in the rain, on this dudes drive with a 1/4drive ratchet set and some bit and bobs I had in the boot at the time)

Anyway, obviously I didn't have time to empty it, and needless to say, there was gearbox oil everywhere. And that stuff does smell, although not quite as bad as ATF

Was transporting some decorating materials with a mate when a 5ltr can of white emulsion burst in the boot of his car. After three hours with rags then filling his boot with water and throwing the boot carpet away you could still tell what had happened. I did the same when Ii borrowed a mates 205 GTI. It was his pride and joy, I borrowed it to get some paint, stuck a tin of emulsion behind the front seat and then enjoyed the drive home, got home and realised the tin had fallen over

Spent ages trying to get the paint out, in the end got another carpet from a breakers to replace it
