Smudger105e Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Now lets see how we can wring a few more pounds from the motorist... Speeding motorists could be required to pay a £15 surcharge on top of fines as a contribution towards a fund for crime victims. Motorists fined for speeding may have to pay a £15 surcharge towards a fund for crime victims So far the surcharge has been levied only on fines handed down in court. But it was confirmed that Justice Secretary Jack Straw is considering extending it to on-the-spot fines and fixed penalty notices, as well as to other punishments imposed by courts. This could mean millions of motorists, including those caught by speed cameras, having to stump up extra cash on top of the minimum £60 penalty, reported the Daily Telegraph. A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "The surcharge has, to date, been applied only to fines, at a rate of £15. The Government is considering whether to extend the surcharge to certain types of penalty notices and other court disposals." The Victim's Surcharge was introduced in April 2007 and latest figures show that between April 2008 and January this year it raised more than £6.6 million. That sum could be vastly increased if the surcharge was extended to more than three million drivers handed fixed penalties for speeding each year. Other offences receiving on-the-spot fines include graffiti, shoplifting and being drunk and disorderly. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20090427/tuk-speeding-fine-may-get-15-surcharge-6323e80.html

Smudger105e Posted April 27, 2009 Author Report Posted April 27, 2009 My big bugbear with this is, which victims are going to be paid the £15?
lee_capri Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 last time i had to pay a speeding fine which i had to go to court for, i had to pay some victim's thing has well cant remember what it was called but i did'nt even hurt any-one it should be the criminals who should have to pay into this charity and not some one who has been caught speeding, tax the car own has their is f**k all he can do about it, if you dont pay then they make you pay
X-pack-Glyn Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Is this on top of the 15 quid i allready pay if i get cought in my leased van?
richie_stix Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 again, a stealth tax from our greedy gov.... if ya ask me, crims who commit real crime like car theft and burglury and the such should have to pay for all the damage they do and the police/ambulance/fire costs asscoiated with their crimes (and if pay for it emans wokring for no pay, so be it!)! that would scare more people than jail, as well as make some p's for our money hungry gov!
FredTransit Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 They've got to find the money for Fred's pension somewhere eh? Woo hoo I'm getting a pension! Can I retire NOW?
Admin Vista Posted April 27, 2009 Admin Report Posted April 27, 2009 They've got to find the money for Fred's pension somewhere eh? Woo hoo I'm getting a pension! Can I retire NOW? Nice try. I tell you what if some of his 750 odd million comes your way, share it about on here and we'll all keep schtum about it
BIGKEV Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 This is Quite Simple Dont Speed - then you wont have to pay fook all - maybe you will save some money on your fuel bill too.
Stu_B Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 agreed Kev (... and this is someone who at one stage had 11 points & has paid well over £200 in fines )
X-pack-Glyn Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Spose you two have never sped in your lives then
FredTransit Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Seriously, WHO on here has NEVER gone over the speed limit? Remember, 31 is over the limit, and on Tower Bridge 21 is over the limit. If you car won't go over 21, there is something wrong with it. It's all too easy to go over the speed limit. I am sorry it's not don't speed, it's don't get caught. I am not talking about 110 past a school, if you do you deserve to loose your license. I am taking 32 in a 30 area. I honestly believe that speed cameras are a money making scheme.
Admin Vista Posted April 27, 2009 Admin Report Posted April 27, 2009 This is Quite Simple Dont Speed - then you wont have to pay fook all - maybe you will save some money on your fuel bill too. I agree with Fred and Glyn, in principle it's as simple as you say Kev but in practice it isn't that straight forward. I have 6 (spent) points on my Licence, 34 in a 30 and 45 in a 40. Both were from mobile cameras and both were on large open roads (the second was a dual carriageway) rather than built up areas. With modern cars it's all too easy to creep over the limit unless you're watching your speedo constantly.........................which would mean you're driving without due care and attention. Arguably the latter is far more dangerous than driving marginally over the speed limit.
BIGKEV Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 My point still stands - I'm not saying that I dont speed - its just the ones who think it is unfair to pay extra money for "breaking" road law wind me up remember if you dont speed you wont get caught speeding if the law stands at 30mph then thats the limit not 34 unless there is a 34mph sign I have heard of 10% add 1mph addage before, therefore 34mph. but alas - it is the round ones
brettp Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 has any one been down the a127 recently average speed cameras now make the road 50 rather than 70 that is ridiculous the already crap drive to work now make s my blood boil when there isnt another car / pedestrian for some 15 mile s they are just a tax collecting aid by a greedy goverment that have screwed thr country hard but do they care two houses fuel /travel paid for and a bullet proof pension
bigdaz27 Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 theres a very easy answer to this DONT speed you wont have to give the goverment any of your hard earnd cash then the goverment get as little of my money as posable
Smudger105e Posted April 27, 2009 Author Report Posted April 27, 2009 I fully understand the "don't speed and you wont get a fine" school of thought, but where the fook does the victim surcharge come into it? Who are the victims that get the extra £15 the speeding motorist gets charged? If speed cameras were not a money making scheme, why was the fine doubled a few years back to £60? Why don't they say no fine, but get six points for example? Surely 2 speeding offences and then a ban would make people think. What happened to the sliding points scale for speeding that was spoken about a while ago. I have 3 points on my licence for 34 in a 30. Same 3 points as I would have got if I was doing 50!

Funny that cos I was nicked for 48 in a 30 ( yes yes I know) I got an MC90 or an MS90 which was excessive speed etc etc When I got my license back it had turned into an SP30 - I wasnt bothered as it looks better - but makes you think
