Trim the bulkhead and floor while your in there and make it half escort

thats what im slowlt doing, dismantled all the passenger side........drive shaft just fell out in my hands should it just slide out

 

nose in the air, gonna find a decent board then lower the engine out with a trolley jack

 

 

ill get there some day

 

 

 

 

 

then its gotta go all back together with the addition of a 1600

I find it easier to drop the engine out with the car on the floor.

 

That way its only got to drop a couple of inches rather than a couple of feet.

 

Then jack the car up just enough to slide the lump out from underneath.

 

Refitting is a reversal, blah blah...

how do you get at the bolts holding the cradle to the car when the cars on the ground

get the angle grinder out and chop the front off. then every thing will be easy to get at

 

oh and escorts are no easier to work on with a pinto in trust me

Now please correct me if i'm wrong, and please let me be wrong, but is that car held up with blocks on soft , un-even ground?

 

If it is .. then stop, your moving a big bulk of the car, this can then cause the car to shift and topple, pulling on that stubborn bolt with a breaker bar can cause the car to topple.

 

Go out and buy some small and large axle stand, yes they can be pricey, but no as expensive as spending a lifetime in a wheelchair because you had a car fall on you, or worse.. cremation

 

The best way of doing any major work is to have all 4 wheels of the ground on proper chassis / axle stands.

 

When i was just starting out i had a lesson taught to me , i was under a car taking the doner engine out and had it propped up on block's, i was dragged out by my ankles and then the guy pushed the car, it toppled over and came crashing down.

 

This guy had walked into the garage block and seen me pulling on a bolt that was siezed, all he could really see was the car moving around above me.

 

Yes he probably saved me some serious injury, he lent me some stands and a load of other stuff over the next few years, and we where mates for years after that day untill he died. at the time i was probably 15/16 ish and he was in his 60's ..yep been there , seen that.

 

So please.... do the job properly ... otherwise you may never be able to do anything else

Yup had my mk1 escy fall off a jack on top of me,lucky it still had the wheels on as would of been crushed if it didnt. Got away with two kin great scars on my head instead though would not even look at a car now unless it was on axle stands.

Very sound advice, when I was about 17 I had to physically lift a Mk1 Fiesta off my friend (or at least high enough for him to get out) He'd gone under it held up by blocks and it came down just as described above. As luck would have it I was walking up the road and got there some 15 or 20 seconds after the event to hear him screaming underneath it. I've no idea where I found the strength, but if I hadn't there's no question he'd be dead now. As it was he escaped with a couple of broken ribs. I didn't pay for any beer for a while I can tell you.

If I can avoid laying under a car for prolonged length of time I will.

I had my mk1 up on an axle stand under all 4 corners durin the summer.

It was on hard flat ground but I hated it...

one of our lecturers at college lost a mate who went under a car when it was only held up by a trolley jack , the trolley jack slowly let itself down and crushed him to death

 

do not try and save money by not buying good essential equipment
