Noisey exhaust!

Got stopped by plod today for noisey exhaust, would fitting a smaller backbox quieten it down? it could then be changed over for the drag strip etc, anyone had similar?

What a bumhole Never been pulled for my exhaust *touches wood* and it's louder than yours Sorry, I don't have an answer for you really though other than an exhaust for the road and one for racing

never had this, i DO however have another option!

 

they are called exhaust cut offs, basically you fit a new box and make it quiet and get an exhaust cut off

 

its basically a valve on a y-piece that you fit into your exhaust, its normally closed so your gasses go though your system, but flip a switch and it will open, thus, cutting off your system

 

you could fit it at the manifold so its like running an open header, or after your middle box to cut off the back part of the system, giving you better flow and more noise for the strip and saves the hassle of swappin back boxes

The baffles could have failed inside the box Malc which would make it noisy.

If you get me some sizes of what box you need I'll see if I have one in stock, would need to know your inlet & outlet tube dia too

Whats the cut off date for the the exhuast only having to be quite enough to talk over on idle.

I think the copper had had a bad day, he said if I see it again i'll charge you! did me for speeding as well it's a bugger cos it's a nice Matt Simpson unit, I have located a standard 2 litre back box will give it a try, and make it interchangable, if no good will give you a call Jon, like the remote idea!

i have 111 DB @ 4000RPM from a distance of 5feet @45degree`s angle from exhaust mate has a meter on his phone to measure this sort of thing but how accurate it is i dont know but i know im louder than legal levels

Get another silencer put in the middle somewhere.

 

Shouldnt restrict power but will cut the noise. A friend has done a similar thing just recently on a 800+HP Audi Quattro to get legal for track days. Bought the silencer from Jetex

Malcom my suggestion would be to move to the South East

 

It'd be much cheaper to change your exhaust than buy a house near London

I had the same problam with my mk2 escort when i had it on the road !! I got a small silencer box from the local scrappy, it was the same shape as the cherry bombs you used to get years ago, just a round stright though can and it did cut down on it popping and banging on the overrun.

wonder how they measure it. on idle.... and half revs, when full thottle is applied etc?

So for most of us OSF'ers then the regulations don't apply to motor vehicles made before Oct 1983, however for the capri and fiesta boys then the noise limit must be below 80 decibels, this however can only be tested with a prescribed device

 

 

I got busted for the same thing, refused to pay the fine and ended up in court, I won the day My car was registered in 1977.

 

I'm sure a smaller silencer will be less efficient and reducing noise.

That copper must of had a shit day. I`ve never been pulled over for a noisy exhaust and i live almost next to the old bill. Also if noise was an issue then how did it pass the mot. Tell them to Foxtrott Oscar!

Going to get it sorted this afternoon,(Monday) less noise and smaller tail pipe, will make it easy to remove so that I can swap it for a straight through pipe when on the strip, keep plod happy else I will be stopped every time it goes out, just for a check of course! had this years ago when I had A Mk 2 Zephyr, twin aerials sprayed red and black, (looked the nut's!) stopped every week sometimes twice a week for a check, got to know the desk sergant quite well!

Try living in an area where you have to put up with booming bass being played every friday and saturday night as well as exhausts that have been modified with baked bean cans, all from shitty Saxos and Corsas!!

mine went 108dbs at recent trackday at combe,i didnt know that 103dbs is actually double 100dbs.mine was measured at 3/4 throttle at 45degrees 1 metre away from the tail pipe.you can buy the noise metres from maplins etc but not sure how accurate they are tbh
