Change of Career Path ??

Morning all

 

Anyone who got up one morning and decided that they were going to make a career change ?

 

If so, what were you doing and what changes did you decide to make,what were your reasons for doing so also at what age did you decide to do this ??

 

Any thoughts on this ?

I am currently doing exactly that Didn't wake up just one morning and decide it though .... been brewing for a couple of years really I work in an office doing payroll/HR/Admin/ISO9001 QA etc ... been at the same company since 31st October 1989 and I'm still here, but .... since February this year have been training to become a driving instructor

 

I have a huge mortgage and so leaving work and going back to college full-time was not an option for me so I had to choose a new career that would bring in a similar income AND that I could train to do in my spare time while still working where I am.

 

I passed Part 1 exam back in May and Part 2 back in July ... I am currently working towards Part 3 (final exam). From January (ish) I will have received the required amount of instruction to be able to teach people on a pink (trainee) licence ... which then gives me 6 months before I have to take the Part 3 test

 

Got myself a little 1.4 '57 plate Fiesta ... just need the dual controls fitted for around £400 and Instructor's Insurance and away I go I plan to continue working here on a 3 day a week basis so that I have guaranteed money coming in while I build up my business as I am going with a small franchise. Didn't fancy AA or BSM with franchise fees of up to £400 PER WEEK

 

So .... that's me changing my life ... oh, and I'm 42

I work for the local council designing safety schemes (improving the signing & lining on dangerouse bits of road) It's ok but I get paid a crap wage & there's not even any job security anymore (the tories were recently voted in & promised a 0% council tax increase which means cutting costs here!)

I'm looking at becoming a tattooist, I've always wanted to do it & now I'm gonna try to do something about it

im currently working in various pub kitchens and have been for a while but its crap money and im still in the same place i was 4 years ago despite countless promises of promotion and payrise form various companies ....

 

im seriously contemplating jacking it in and doing something else the problem is startup and working capital .. cashflow essentially i have fook all of it lol.

 

my parents are looking at buying another house in france to renovate and then sell on for a profit and between us my dad and i can do pretty much all of the work but i wouldnt be able to take a salary as it were untill the sale of the house ....

 

but im also looking at renting a unit on a farm or something locally and doing car repairs and servicing and also giving me a place to buy and sell from because ive been buying and selling cars for a while on the side and if i could find enough cars i could make decent money but theres the risk element and again needing money to set up , buy ramps and equipment

I left school with no GCSE's so started working at Asda full time. I was in the shower one morning n realised that this was my life n I was going no were. I decided to go to college do my GCSE'S again (and got then went on to do my A levels and now I’m at university studding Automotive Engineering and Design. It was the best decision I have ever made. Oh I still work at Asda but only part time to support myself.

Much like Jo, my decision built over the course of a couple of years. I left the RN in 2002 after 15 1/2 years, partly because I was tired of watching less capable people than me get promoted before me on the strength of their arse kissing skills and partly because I thought I could do the job of some of my superiors better than they were.

 

So I left, translated my military marine engineering experience into commercial qualifications in the Merchant Navy and moved into the superyacht industry. My career took off in I way I hadn't imagined and I'm much much better off now than I was in the RN, more job satisfaction too.

I changed mine in 1990, (43) left the contract toolmaking company with 2 other guy's and started our own engineering company up, gave the houses to the bank, (more or less!) and worked 14 hour + days for the first few years, at one time employing around 60 people, wev'e got more automation now so down to about 35, paid off, but dam hard work!

At the age of 21, time served heavy engineer and union shop steward. I looked around at the knackered old farts nearing retirement trying to earn the same bonus as me, same walls every day, and thought no chance. I joined the Police, (it was back in the day, when being built like a brick khazi and having a pulse was about the only entry req.) Took a 75% pay cut. I Ioved it, only to be spat out a raspberry 20yrs later, but give me new spine and 30yrs and I'd do it all over again.

From working in various factory environments, double glazing firms & van driving & being made redundant constantly(!) I decided at the age of 30 to take up a college course doing Computer Aided Design & Draughting.

 

Part way through doing my HNC & loving it!!

 

As a sideline project, for the past few days I've been designing a mk1 Escort front end drawing using AutoCAD & it looks fantastic!!

Career? To me that word emplies that a person would have trained for that one thing and then taken a position doing that one thing and then continued to do that one thing untill they retired.

 

I think I would probably die

 

Sometimes my best days were getting the sack, as it made me go and look at other things. People in this country naturally don't like change, but sometimes it's good for you
