Just got our house on the market this week, looking to relocate to Cornwall in Spring fingers crossed. I know Cornwall like the back of me hand but house prices are soooo expensive unless you go inland a little. Anyone know any nice areas where prices are still relatively good? Got a budget of around £170,000-£180,000 max. Cant wait......

Admin Vista Posted January 28, 2010 Admin Report Posted January 28, 2010 I also live in Cornwall (though only just) House prices are higher in the popular touristy type areas as so many people buy second homes down here but look for one in more conventional non coastal towns like Callington, Liskeard, Bodmin and similar as you go further west and they should be more reasonable. Another thing to bear in mind is how far down do you want to be? transport links in and out of Cornwall aren't great at the best of times and with the roads full of grockles every summer are a nightmare. So if your work requires that you travel regularly, don't forget to consider that.

mexman123 Posted January 28, 2010 Author Report Posted January 28, 2010 To be honest, i'm not fussed how far west i go, i have even been looking in the St Just area, or Pendeen, work is not an issue as such, i am keeping £10,000-£15000 back to live on once we have moved, and as my job is as a quite successful car salesman, i am not worried at all in being able to secure a job at one of the dealers down there. Penzance, Truro, Redruth, all have loads of main dealers....If neccessary, my wife and youngest son will move down, and i will temporarily stay up here in Brum in my current job (live at my mothers during working week), until i can secure something down there. This is the culmination of a 5 year plan, and now that my eldest has secured a Uni placement, we are free to finally do it.....

capriaddict Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 Good luck with the move. I moved down here 2 years ago and love it I don't live to far from Vista. To be honest regarding house price's as Vista said they tend to be cheaper in east/north cornwall, it depends what size house you want. When i moved my budget restricted me to this area, i sort of drew a rough line round Saltash, Liskeard, Bodmin and Launceston. Plus i had to make sure i could get a job, the further west you go the harder it is (especially as an outsider ). I'm only about 1/2 hour drive from Plymouth where i am, but i managed to find a decent job in Launceston. All the best with it and hopefully we'll see you here soon
mexman123 Posted January 28, 2010 Author Report Posted January 28, 2010 Cheers, it will be nice to get the Mexico out and about in Cornwall and hopefully meet up with some Cornish OSF'drs. (Thats if i ever get it back from the restorers ) Shouldn't be long now, its having the front end completely rebuilt with NOS inner wings etc...Rest of the car i have restored myself but the front end was a little beyond my capabilities. I have decided that Camborne/Redruth is not really my cup of tea to be honest/ no disrespect to anyone that lives there, it just seems a little too built up for my liking , which is what i am trying to get away from here in Brum....although prices are amongst the cheapest in Cornwall...Have been looking on rightmove and the like, quite like the Looe/Polperro area (know it well) and also on the Lizard peninsula (Lizard village/Porthleven etc), and also around Delabole/Tintagel area. I don't expect (or want) a mansion, but just a nice minimum 2 bedroom cottage type property with a garage preferably for the OSF obviously!! Oh well, keep looking i suppose, but until i get an offer on this place, not much i can do anyway, apart from research. Whats the OSF scene like in deepest/darkest Cornwall?? Be nice to finally start doing some meets after nearly 7 years non roadworthy ownership
Mrs O/H/C Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 Well, you have made a great decision moving to Cornwall We moved here just over 3 years ago from the Carshalton/Wallington area of Surrey. As you might know i do run a OSF meet here in the Duchy at Route 38 so it would be nice for you to come along. We also were a bit wary of the Camborne/Redruth area, so we chose a village location just outside Camborne and we are very happy here and compared to the estates up-country there is nothing to worry about Lead foot works in Penryn,Falmouth and even though its a 15 mile trip, it only takes 20 mins. Seems llike a respectable village though having quickly spoken to the agents...and not far fom the beautiful North Coast ... JUST had a phone call from the agents as well, viewing booked for Sunday.. Whooopp-whoooop, fingers crossed, i can almost taste them pasties...

Mrs O/H/C Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 Chacewater is a nice place ..but there are loads of nice places Where we are in our little village we are central to St Ives,Lands End,Penzance,Truro and Falmouth Also the North Coast is 4-5 miles away
mexman123 Posted January 28, 2010 Author Report Posted January 28, 2010 Yep, they are relatively cheap areas, and i do know them well, and i dont thnk they are bad areas at all, just a little too built up for my liking..Camborne and Redruth seem to have merged into one large town now, i suppose there are good and bad areas of a large town wherever you go, although i have never seen anything really rough anywhere in Cornwall. .A nice village location with a couple of nice pubs is all i'm after. I actually despise living in Birmingham now, although i am right on the Southern outskirts. People have said to me 'what about in the winter when its like a ghost-town?', but to be honest, although i live literally 3 miles from the centre of Birmingham, and my local busy high street is 1/2 mile away, i cant actually remember the last time i had any need or desire to venure into town or city centre, I hate it... The Cornish folk have always been very hospitable and helpful whenever i have been and yes, i spend a lot of time down there at all times of the year, summer when its chaos, and even winter when its quite. Nothing beats a walk along the South West coastpath with the dog (not the wife!) on a clear, cold deserted winters day. Many a time we have just jumped in the car, and headed down for a couple of days even in deepest winter, somehow that makes the attraction all the more, no crowds, no traffic jams, no stress, no violence, and no crime really to speak of. It just needs to happen now as its on my mind 24/7. I know its different living there to being an 'emmet' or 'grockle' who goes on holiday once a year and dreams of living there, reality is very different to that i know. The Cornish have to put up with a lot really, long damp Atlantic winters, stupid holidaymakers, and poor national wages and ridiculous house prices, but i suppose if its really what i long for, i have got to go for it, if it dosn't work out then Hey...at least i have given it a go.
Mrs O/H/C Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 I have been visiting Cornwall since i was a small child and have always felt that it was my "soul place" It was a long awaited dream for me and there are down sides like missing good friends and close family but for me that was a small price to pay. The winters are no worse than up-country and it tends to be a few degrees warmer here . Winter/Summer...you still have great friends and fantastic scenery. Our village is a community..a great school,a local shop and a pub. As said wherever you live within a town there is good and bad areas...i didnt want to live in a town as that was what i was escaping from. To be honest you would have to look hard to find a "bad area" within Cornwall. i often take my dog for a long walk along the gwithian beach which is miles long..there is nothing like it as it makes you feel alive
sab6024 Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 Good Luck on the move I live in the centre of Cornwall right on the A30 and 7 miles from anywhere of any importance such as Towns, City and any decent beaches Though to be honest I'm not very clued up on property prices.
