V8ian Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 I spent my youf up at Crystal Pallace and Brands, Oh Happy days, an about 76/77??? may have been a bit later, I had shares in a Wendy wools Special Saloon Hilman Imp, we even got the god of imp engines George Bevan out of retirement to build our engines, what a nice man, Lack of money forced us to sell up after we wrapped the car, Later we bought a VW Variant fast back, on a F5000 march tub and eventually fitted with a all ally CanAm Surtees big block chev,engine number was "SUR001" after an "expert" freshened up the engine we wrecked the crank by plumbing the Dry sump pump up incorrectly, Couldent afford to run the imp let alone a 600hp thunder saloon, it was retired, left in a garage for about 10 years and sold on. Many Many Happy memories of those days when club racers could race with the big boys, unfortunatly The pallace shut before we had a chance to race there,
RTo Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 Still prefer rallying though after watching a video like that, how could you say such a thing Track racing is a spectator friendly sport and I love watching it. But if I were a driver I'd never do that because there's always a chance that your car will be wrecked due to someone else's error. In rallying the well-being of your car depends on your skills.

mk1super Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 Wicked vid great to see the Escorts going like they should ( Like the hounds of hells after em! ) I love rallying also, none of the wrc plastic stuff but theres something about watching Mk1/2s being chucked around on gravel A lasting memory for me is when the Granite city rally (Mid 90s) used to do a tarmac night stage, there was a Rs1800 went round as the sun came down, Cibies on, engine barking like a good un, even when it went out of sight you could still hear that induction noise,and tires fighting for grip.

Im shakin from the adrenaline of it! when the escort pushed in front of the camaro after the mini was in the way could just sence the camaros frustration and then on the straight he knew he had more straightline speed and gunned it for too long his heart musta been poundin thinking "im gonna get passed him im gonna get passed him - shit!" and off he goes. Cant you look on Rods site for yaself ... i dunno ... anyways heres the link to the provisional calender http://www.rodbirley.com/2007%20Calendar.htm If anyone wants to know about the " Tintops" races .. there should be info elsewhere on Rods site, but basicly if you have a race licence and fancy having a go without paying for a season then this is for you, Cat B tyres must be used , so no slicks and the level of the mods isnt so great so speeds (collisions ) are rare. Its being used as a feeder series for the DTRC Oh and by the way , the DTRC was voted the 3rd best championship in the country behine the BTCC and Formula Ford ... told you it was good Have a look through the galleries on Rods site ... give you an idea of the class of cars and the racing, its close, very close , but fair racing . Escort Chick was at Lydden when Andy Pipe(1600cc Mk1), Alex Ribbens (2000cc Mk2 arched and linked) and Greg Pye (alfa something) were head to tail, side by side , swapping the class lead for lap after lap and was only decided when Andy was inside Greg and Greg lost it , rubbing Andy in the process, Alex nipped through and held Andy off for the final laps with his extra 30-40 bhp and wider tyres, people where cheering these 3 on throughout the whole race and applauded them when they came back into the paddock, all 3 drivers laughing and hugging each other and patting each other on the back, Gregs car had a little scuff on his front wheel arch and on Andy's car i had to get the bars and hammers out on his rear 1/4 ... Andy won driver of the race for that drive along with 2nd in Class .. Escort Chicks uncle on the other had a hole in his block.. its ok though .. its an XE and Alan was laughing about it afterwards.. "thats racing"
