Badgerman85 Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 so basically last year before i took my escort off the road it started having some issues, intermittently cutting out a hell of alot. so last week i had a poke about in the engine, plenty of spark from the coil but not alot from the plug leads, had a look and, discovered the inside of the dizzy cap was knackered so i got another one. fitted that today, still cutting out, rather alot too, ive changed the spark plugs and put a couple of different sets of leads on and thats not helped, theres plenty of fuel getting to both carbs, spark seems good. compression tested it as well, 1 & 3 are around 120psi, and 2 & 4 are around 90 psi. any ideas people??
SmokeEm Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 I reckon the coil could be at fault intermittently
Badgerman85 Posted April 12, 2010 Author Report Posted April 12, 2010 yea i was thinking that for a bit, what should my compression be like? i got no idea...
glenbo Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 my mate had a simular problem with his mini, turned out to be the distributor
livewire7116 Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 did you change points , condensor and rotor arm as a matter of course?
Badgerman85 Posted April 12, 2010 Author Report Posted April 12, 2010 did you change points , condensor and rotor arm as a matter of course? its an electronic one so nothing to change other than the rotor and cap, which are both now mint!
escort21 Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 I suspect the coil is at fault...the insides break down as it gets hot
Jiffer Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 isnt the compression a little on the low side, Fiesta Steve is the man to ask or the Oracle as I call him
Badgerman85 Posted April 12, 2010 Author Report Posted April 12, 2010 isnt the compression a little on the low side, Fiesta Steve is the man to ask or the Oracle as I call him test was done when the engine was totally cold, probably didnt help!
Jiffer Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 still likely to be an electrical fault if cutting out intermittently
Badgerman85 Posted April 12, 2010 Author Report Posted April 12, 2010 now all i need to do is find someone in the area with a constant energy coil....or buy another one and see what happens!
Toby Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 You need all the plugs out and foot to the floor throttle for a comp test. Your results are very low...I am suspicious of your foot!
vibrating_Cake Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 coil, compression is "there" and its "visible" lol. if you're down to silly figures like 40psi and less on one or more cylinders thats when you start worrying electrical, the coil feeds the plugs+dizzy low power to both of these=weak spark/no spark which is your cutting out etc also give your fuel filters a change if they havent been done in a while, rules clogged filters out =)

andytechno Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 make sure you get one thats for an electronic ignition
Andrade Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 When put the pinto in the viva it used to turn off after about 15 mins of driving, i used to wait for 15 mins, then it would start up normally again. I changed coil, put lumenition in, alternator, and there was enough spark to cook a chicken. Then i went on to fuel, changed the carburettor, changed a few old pipes, and it still did it. Turns out it was the fuel filter
