... my eldest son Jordan is 15 and is doing work experience this week  He is at a garage called TGM Motorsport http://www.tgmsport.co.uk/ (and apart from the normal servicing etc of cars, they specialise in race tuning Honda saloon cars 8):thumbsup:

Now, when I was at school ... I can't remember doing work experience (I am too old) but I'm sure it was never anywhere "cool".

So ... I told Jordan this morning to be on his best behaviour, help where he can and sound keen etc and not have his mobile phone out except during a break

I got 1 text message a short while ago (must be his lunch break) and it said "Nice set of R888 lol " Do you think that we have turned him into a petrolhead :lol::lol::lol::lol:

My question is, what was your work experience like boys and girls???

that sounds like an amazing placement!

long time ago now but i got to do mine at dartford police station when i was 15 - that was very cool indeed

i did a second one in the 6th form on an exchange with a dutch boy but that was rubbish - sat in an office at the council with nothing to do for a few days - when we did the work experience in rotterdam though we got to go on one of those massive tankers, they even let me hold the steering wheel

Mine was at Wadham Stringer the BL dealer in Aldershot back in 1986. After the 1st week they offered me a job when I left school as an apprentice coz even at 15, I made light work of a head gasket change on a Mini Metro

I worked there 2 years before deciding that being a mechanic would never earn decent money so I left to pursue my career elsewhere

I was at the local Ford dealers 'Haynes of Maidstone' got told to come along with a pair of overalls, so turned up in some red ones with yellow stripes, with hot rod patches all over them  felt a bit of a dick so borrowed a pair of Ford ones that swamped me!!

All i can remember was having to stand on a box to reach over and take the plugs out a granada :D

I went to work in a hotel as a porter, was really good & enjoyed it. They invited me back to work there in the summer holidays.

At my kids school they let you sort out your own work experience rather than the school doing it which sounds better than having no choice at all (like I did) Jordan's sounds perfect

I'm like you Jo, no such pre school leaving treats for me. When I wanted work experience, I had to experience work. I spent the spring season busting my balls on a Holiday caravan site helping prepare it for the forthcoming holiday season..............though as it was actually my first job (albeit a temporary one) I was experiencing work rather than getting work experience.

Is that allowed in the force now then Daggle?

I worked at Dobles, a well known motorcycle sales/repairs/ service centre in Coulsdon. Was wicked until I crashed a 400 hornet at lunch time coz I thought I could ride!! They got the right hump with that so I left….with a limp!

I Had always wanted a bike before that, but put me off so went and bought a Mk1 Cappa 3.0 when I turned 17 and subsequently got banned a month later for speeding…:lol: loved Osf's from then on

I did a week in 1979 at AA Cundells garage in Tunbridge Wells (long gone). They let me adjust the brakes on a few cars so I hope the owners were ok. I also went out brake testing on the MOTs with the brake force meter in the passenger footwell (some of the motors went in very strange directions. I also broke a couple of things, they did'nt offer me a job and I went on to work in the electricity industry.

I spent a week with my Dad at a 'busy' magazine publisher's. I seem to remember it involved a lot of lunch-time meetings, most of which took place in country pubs and included a few drinks and a meal. It taught me a valuable life lesson which, although I didn't understand the relevance of at the time, is of vital importance to me now: always get a VAT receipt...:beer:

 I think it's actively encouraged in the forces these days. In their effort to be PC they've gone out to recruit as many black lesbians and homosexuals as they possibly can!

I went to an electronics place, mostly testing aircraft warning lights, it was ok

Our local school totally screwed up mrspeanuts sons working experience, they promised they had him a place sorted. So we thought cool, he'll finally get to see what the real world is like. Then they screwed up his place and said he could go in the school office for a week. So he worked short school hours and sat drinking tea and eating biscuits for a week, what use is that?
