andy1980 Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 What are people running in there cosworth powered motors? what mods have been done and how reliable have they been?
sambo Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 there are plenty of people using english axles with quite high powered YB turbo's. It all depends on what tyres your running. If your unarched and using little 13x6" wheels n tyres, then i reckon the english will be fine as the grip just breaks before any of the related components. If, however your arched and running 8-10" wide rubber, then an atlas will be fine unless your running silly turbo power. Most people use std atlas's with around 330bhp with no probs. I was running a std Atlas with 230BHP (N/A) recently and that was fine and took all the abuse i could throw at it. Its all on how deep your pockets are, you could uprate the atlas shafts to quaife/squires 2-piece shafts for extra security. I will be putting roughly 250bhp through a std atlas on 8" wheels soon.
andy1980 Posted July 30, 2010 Author Report Posted July 30, 2010 I'm running an atlas. with 9j wheels and 225 R888's, power wise i'm looking to have around 380bhp, am i best off getting the uprated shafts? fostek quoted around £600 for these.
turnover Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 i run mustang no probs with it, your atlas should be ok on 888s but if you run slicks then the shafts will help,i presume you have a lsd in there
Mick The Cabbie Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 My Starlet currently runs a 270BHP YB I recently built a 48inch baby Atlas with Squires 18tooth 2piece shafts & LSD. 7x13 rims with soft 175/50 A048Yokos. Soon to be 330+BHP & will prob use slicks for the strip. Thought I'd better build a strong axle first before I hike the power up.. My Escort runs a 145ish brake pinto with a std English axle & open diff. I broke the planet gears on the start line @ Pod last year. I was running slicks and it was only a moderate launch. I couldn't believe how easily it broke!!! Deffo need something better than an english if ya running any kind of decent power and wanna use it properly
turnover Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 if you get a good launch with slicks then it may break the axle if its not strong enough, its not the power so much as the grip
DEP Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 Baby atlas on mine with quaife internals, copes fine with 400bhp
mk1cossydan Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 Baby atlas on mine with quaife internals, copes fine with 400bhp snap! but running mine on 13" lotus steels the person i baught my axle of it was running 380bhp yb turbo
deltamal Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 I'm using an Atlas with Capper slipper diff, and Fostec half shafts, Toyo 888'ts 14" x 225, just over 300 brake with the nos, all works well......

Its the torque that kills them, not so much the bhp. Atmo cossie engines make bugger all torque, even compared to a lightly tuned turbo engine. What set up are you gonna run ? puddy
andy1980 Posted July 31, 2010 Author Report Posted July 31, 2010 I'm running approx 380hp, its going to be road/ track day use and all i've got at the min is a std axle, so i know i need an LSD but again i'm open to suggestions as to which one. When people say quaffe internals, what are the internals?
ZetecTinaLee Posted July 31, 2010 Report Posted July 31, 2010 I run an atlas with quaife internals with 400hp+ and 888's Mines been ok so far with some quite hard launchs at the pod
Mk 1 Mark Posted July 31, 2010 Report Posted July 31, 2010 Baby atlas on mine with quaife internals, copes fine with 400bhp snap! but running mine on 13" lotus steels the person i baught my axle of it was running 380bhp yb turbo Same as works with me on the van
kevmk2 Posted July 31, 2010 Report Posted July 31, 2010 Zf splined shafts and zf style diff, been on the car for around 7 or 8 years with no bother and I drive it slow
Skimmer Posted July 31, 2010 Report Posted July 31, 2010 Standard van axle though with new diff though not LSD and all works fine done plenty of miles in it especially from the traffic lights
