converting a mk2 escort van to mk1 front??????

i know ive heard of this being done before but im just wondering is it worth the hassle. ill be starting a full rebuild on my van soon, (will start a thread) usual stuff, arches, sills etc and maybe some sort of "different" engine transplant!

 

i may have access to a mint mk1 car front end and was pondering the idea having seen a couple of real sweet mk1 vans recently.

so id probably get away with the door pillars, arent the mk1 pillars same as the car, hinges part of the pillar where as the mk2 van has bolt on hinges. probably wouldnt matter as the doors are the same.

 

are the chassis legs the same i wonder or would it be simpler to splice them at thier original joint?

same question asked here, sounds promising that the mk1 van/estate wings/bonnet/maybe-front-panel should be the same size as the mk2 van/estate items but.... no definite answer as far as i can see. hard to decide what to do with with an estate/van that has a mk2 front end and a mk1 rear end.

 

oldbus has that sold now from what ive read and seen on the German for sale sites

 

interested to see what you've up your sleeve this time for engine choice I guess it wont have a hair dryer so....

am i correct in thinking that the grey yb turbo van with ford express parts delivery signwriting that races at the pod is a mk2 with a mk1 front?? i think i heard someone saying it was before.

They are interchangeable though I thought the front panel and outer wings were all you needed to change. My impression is that mk1 outer wings will go on mk2 inner wings. There's a member on here (pirate) with a mk1 van running a mk2 front end, he might be worth a PM too to ask what's involved as he bought it like that and is looking at going back to mk1.

 

Personally I'd just leave it as a mk2.

If you could just fit the outer wings, i think the Mk2 inners might give you a bit more room to fit something different ?

 

They seem to be a bit wider, certainly the battery tray holds a bigger battery

sounds very simple if the inner wings dont need changing. but dont the mk1 inner wings fall down at the front towards the mk1 slam panel where as mk2 inner wings more or less keep the same level all the way out. all very interesting!!

The van / estate front ends are the same as Mk1 escort saloons so you should be able to do some measurements fairly easily ?

There quite different when you actually get down to it even the wing drip rails will need replacing if your good at fabrication work then its possible but its really not just a case of remove one front end then put another on , the amount of times ive heard " just change the wings n front panel " n hey presto MK1 .........i know as ive just recently done one ( Van conversion ) ......
