I've heard that from one source too but can't say I experienced anything like it myself. It would take off their own e coat if that were so.

Synergy Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 I've just had my shell blasted and I have to say I am very happy with the results, no pannel damage done by the process at all, blasted and etch primed for £250

Skoty Posted October 17, 2010 Report Posted October 17, 2010 i shot blasted mine myself, just used kiln dried sand as it rips through pand and rust but leaves the metal nice and smooth.
Chris! Posted October 17, 2010 Report Posted October 17, 2010 I've had 2 shells acid dipped in the last year, the acid doesn't run once it's painted, maybe it did a few years back before they perfected the method

Admin Vista Posted October 17, 2010 Admin Report Posted October 17, 2010 I've had 2 shells acid dipped in the last year, the acid doesn't run once it's painted, maybe it did a few years back before they perfected the method where did ya get em done? and how much? Same place as mine and my experience of it is the same as Chris. It works out quite expensive at over £2k for the full acid dip and e-coat but on the other hand, no amount of blasting will get inside all your chassis rails nor will it get to areas hidden by other metal unless you've really stripped the shell first (wings, front panel etc). Additionally, acid dip and e-coat is the only method that will properly coat and protect everything 100%, it even rust proofs inside the sills and chassis rails. http://www.surfaceprocessing.co.uk/for-cars.html If I was to do another project, there's no doubt in my mind that I'd use the same process again.
Retromotorsport Posted October 19, 2010 Report Posted October 19, 2010 Having cut open both blasted and dipped, and dipped then e-coated shells, I would go with dipping 100% On sections where i had cut out overlapping seams these are the results blasted : rust was evident inbetween the layers, Dipped : clean metal with slight pitting, obviously where rust was Dipped and E coated : the metal was black on both side, ie 100% protected. As for cost.. i would pay more than the cost of dipping for a car that has been dipped.. blasting dosnt really add any value, because most pros know, it cant cure rust where it cant get, and all these cars start rusting at the seams... rust absorbs moisture, causing further rust. As for acid dripping out, BS.. If somones paint job was ruined by acid dripping out ( acid that evaporates in 24 hours) would be all over the net, anyone seen the pics? thought not. There was a shell that had a liquid bleeding out from it, and it was found to be the panel wipe the bodyshop had used. bearing in mind that i have opened up seams and cavities and found no liquid at all, and the shell is normally not painted within a week of dipping, no way would any acidict moisture be left. Soda blasting, I've banned Soda blasted cars from my workshop, never ever again will i have that stuff in my workshop... just google for what happens when they blast your house with it, you cant get rid of the stuff, it leaks out for weeks, getting into everthing as a fine dust, ruining air-tools, computers, eyes and skin. The most expensive part of the car is the shell..even a standard one. think about it, 3-4 k for a mk1 shell, 5k prep and paint. Thats a standard shell.. standard engine is what? 3K... So lets just say your shells 10k, another 20% ontop... small price really for peace of mind. I've seen blasted cars start rotting and bleeding orange rust from the seams in a few years.. Also, look what else goes through the dippers doors, Old Mercs, Astons, Jags, Porsches, etc .. If its good enough for them, its good enough for an OSF
