Craigorypeck Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 My current standard Capri brakes are very average, they suffer badly from brake fade. I'm considering an upgrade with discs all round. What upgrades are good? Standard 2.8 capri items up front maybe or wilwoods, APs, High specs??? I wanny keep the 13" minilites I have on too.. Could I source a complete set up from a doner car maybe?? Will the master cylinder need adapted for 4 discs, will a bias valve of some sort be needed too? When the YB goes in I'll defo need the extra stopping power..!
Beakster Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 When I fitted green stuff pads with refurbed 2.8 calipers, braided hoses, new vented drilled discs and 5.1 fluid it made a massive difference. Went around brands hatch all day without any significant brake fade, and they were more than enough to stop my 2.0 Capri. Next step up is Granada 260mm calipers and Land Rover Master Cylinder. Apparently they dissipate the heat better as the disc is on the outside of the hub. I got the 280mm discs from Mondeo/Granada Cosworth and they seem to do the job just fine, but havent done any serious track time.
Craigorypeck Posted November 18, 2010 Author Report Posted November 18, 2010 Cheers Beaks! Are 2.8 callipers a direct fit to 2.0 struts? Is it just a case of bunging the whole lot on, connecting the fluid nipple and away you go?? This seams the cheapest option..
Andrade Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 Brake fade is generally related to overheating, so vented discs will solve the issue. You can either put a spacer kit in your M16s or else find the 2.8 goodies. If u manage to source a 2.8 front end just put the whole lot in though since you'll have a thicker ARB etc
Andrade Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 ... and Land Rover Master Cylinder. Do you know whether the landrover servo fits?
Beakster Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 Cheers Beaks! You can space 2.0 Calipers to make them into 2.8 Calipers. You also need some spacers when mounting them, and you need to remove the dust sheilds too. Burton's do a kit with all you need. But yeah, once the calipers are spaced, or you have 2.8 calipers its just bolt on and bleed the system. Do you know whether the landrover servo fits? The Land Rover Master Cylinder fits the 2.0 Capri Girling Servo. It's not recommended unless you are fitting bigger calipers though, e.g. from the Granada/Mondeo.
Andrade Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 The Land Rover Master Cylinder fits the 2.0 Capri Girling Servo. It's not recommended unless you are fitting bigger calipers though, e.g. from the Granada/Mundano. Does the servo itself fit the capri though? The one on mine is gone and i'm currently using the car with the servo disconnected. I tried most local shops and couldnt find a replacement. I was assuming the land rover unit would be a bit easier to find if it is compatible?
Grizzley Dell Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 there are around 8 differerent landrover masters, i have a feeling that the large one(25mm bore i think) will be too much and put you through the screen.
Craigorypeck Posted November 18, 2010 Author Report Posted November 18, 2010 Is this the spacer from burtons? https://www.burtonpower.com/product_mai ... per_spacer Then just put 2.8 discs on..
escort21 Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 All you get with 2.8 brakes is less fade due to them being vented but they won't brake any better than solid discs. Better off with a caprisport kit especially if a na cossy is going in it
bortaf Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 Forget the 2.8 capri caliper and do straight to 2.8i Mk2 granada calipers with capri vented discs you get more pad surface area and better cooling, use some good 5.1 fluid with all new shoes, cylinders and drums. Bolts straight on cheap and ford offerd it as an upgrade for the 3.0 X pack cars Trust me there's way more than 8 differant LR laster cylinders and TBH a few i know who fitted the 25mm one found it too large and a few have gone back to the slightly smaller Mk2 granny 23mm master. IMHO you only need the LR 25mm master with rear discs and mondeo or similar front calipers, as then you will need to move a lot more fluid than with the standard setup (bigger pistons in the mondy caliper and rear calipes are way larger than drum cylinders) don't listen to the bollox on ebay about how you can fit the 25mm ones to a standard system they are just trying to sell items not give good advice 25mm will give a VERY hard pedal and allmost no progrssive feel at all on a standard system. Think what you like about caprisport but what they say about brakes makes sense but for a cheaper option see my first paragraph http://www.caprisport.com/ I'd say choose what wheel you want to run then fit the best system that will fit behind em although TBH i'm not a fan or rear discs, they are overkill on most road cars and are biased do low that they do hardly any work and as a result seize (never get hot enough to totaly burn out all the moisture that gets in em) and you get a shit handbrake 90% of all rear disc brake problems i see at work are seized calipers, the front do like 80+% of the braking so concentrate on them.
Craigorypeck Posted November 18, 2010 Author Report Posted November 18, 2010 Waow! Very good advice there chaps! I know now what exactly I need to do... Thanks again!
stevie.t Posted November 19, 2010 Report Posted November 19, 2010 iv used xj6 m/c which is 15/16 bore thes will bolt fiesta mk1, escort 1 and 2, so i would think that it would fit a capri
JP. Posted November 20, 2010 Report Posted November 20, 2010 I am with Bortaf ( wow and that not very common ). I have the 25mil brake master with 2.0 laser servo on Princess four pots and stock 2.8/3.0 drums with 21mm cilinders. Brake pedal is hard and less progressive. Its exactly as Bortaf describes. You'll need huge overkill brake callipers all around to have any benefit for this. Yepp LandRover 25mil brake masters are bloody cheap compared to the ATE replacemend masters. A pair of good Granada 2.8 callipers on Capri vented disks will do the job on a standard brake master. And why fit rear disks as 70% of your brake power needs to be on the front wheels. As sayed before, a well maintained and serviced standard brake system is well up to the job also. Remember the age of your currend brake system. How long ago was it when it recieved a proper service ????? Brake fluid needs to be replaced every two years !!!! It gets hydroscopic.....so water gets in your system.... water makes rust and so on.... How old is your brake fluid ????
Craigorypeck Posted November 20, 2010 Author Report Posted November 20, 2010 The callipers and discs are brand new, no older than 12 months, they were just standard items. Fluid changed at the same time. There is a hill near where I live and when the car goes down it the brakes are non existent by the bottom, I means nothing!! And I intermittently use them so they wont heat too much.. Deffo gonna do some track daying when the YBs in too.
Grizzley Dell Posted November 20, 2010 Report Posted November 20, 2010 as said by others,,granada calipers with capri disk sounds the way to go and is what ive got to go on my mk 2 tina, bigger pad area and as said vented gives less fade.

That don't sound right at all mate, you sure the rears are fully adjusted ? if they are not they will place all teh work on the fronts and they will overheat and you'll loose the brakes ? the rears don't do a lot but they do dictate the ballence of the system and that extra 20% load on the fronts will cause overheating under harsh conditions As said in standard form they were and can be very good IF (big if) everything is spot on, i ran the non vented granny calipers on me V6 cortina and they were shit hot BUT the entier system was new and i was running decent 15 inch tyres which made the most differance TBH

Craigorypeck Posted November 21, 2010 Author Report Posted November 21, 2010 MOT was a few months ago and all was tip top, the hill is very long tho!!
