Have you tried starting it in safe mode?

just about to say that my self....press F8 to get into safe mode when booting up....also do you see the windows vista logo come up and does it get passed that part?

Black screen with the option of start normally or launch system repair

Tried all of that with no joy ...so pressed f8 and got up all options like safe mode...safe mode with networking etc

But still will not start up

are there any usb disks or memory cards plugged in? sometimes if set to boot from these it can try eternally to boot from those instead of the internal disk. otherwise sounds like you might have some broken hardware.

No discs in ....and no memory stick BUT i did use a memory stick for the first time in this p,c the other day (dont know if that has any bearing on it)

It has been working fine until it froze this morning, i shut it down and it wont boot up since :roll::roll:

theres probably some bad sectors on the disk, its easily fixable with chkdsk but youll need a windows vista cd to boot up off!
