mk1estate Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 just took the dog out and noticed my mk1 escort has been clamped, they want £160 for removal. before anyone says anything it was parked on the road without tax as i was going to move it to sambos house for off road parking, ok i know it was wrong but i guess someone has phoned up to complain, it is on scorn but i know that dont matter, just have to pay up i guess but £160 is a big chunk of money just after christmas especially with my job on the cards too
Admin Vista Posted January 5, 2011 Admin Report Posted January 5, 2011 Was it clamped because of the tax or was it clamped because it was illegally parked?
fieldy1972 Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 sounds like it was clamped for having no tax whilst being parked out on road.. if so then theres nowt can be done. i had an xr4i years ago. parked it out on the road for about 5 hours so i could fix a whole in garage roof. nosie neighbour + short phone call = £££ fine !!!
mk1estate Posted January 5, 2011 Author Report Posted January 5, 2011 I guess someone has reported it as having no tax. I was going to stick it on my sons drive but they beat me to it. £160 seem a lot of dosh though
mk1estate Posted January 5, 2011 Author Report Posted January 5, 2011 if i pay the £160 can i keep it i was about to advertise it soon anyway
mk1estate Posted January 5, 2011 Author Report Posted January 5, 2011 phone the clampers and cos there is no tax on it the cost is now £260 ie £100 release fee and £160 cos it aint taxed. Going to try to tax it tom then its only going to cost me the £100 release fee, but have to fing the log book and of course get insurance. Does anyone know if you can get insurance for just a few days cover only
livewire7116 Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 i know someone who got clamped for no tax in a private car park, it turned out they have to report it first then there has to be a certain amount of time between the reporting and it actually being clamped, worth checking before paying any money,
Fiesta Steve Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Can you not accidently knock the clamp off some how? and then just move the car ?
Trevmk3 Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Can you not accidently knock the clamp off some how? and then just move the car ? got to make sure you dont damage it though doing that
fieldy1972 Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Can you not accidently knock the clamp off some how? and then just move the car ? got to make sure you dont damage it though doing that disc cutter is out of the question then
Billy_smith Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 u can get them off without damaging them
livewire7116 Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 if its an official dvla clamp which will be identified on the side, im pretty sure cos its a goverment department you can get into trouble for tampering with it, if its not and you cut it off then its your word against theres it was on there unless they have taken photo evidence of car with clamp fitted to it
Fiesta Steve Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Wasn't me officer, I was in the pub all night Innocent until proven guilty !
fieldy1972 Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Wasn't me officer, I was in the pub all night Innocent until proven guilty ! ahhh like your style
mk1estate Posted January 5, 2011 Author Report Posted January 5, 2011 the clamp comes with a free warning that its a criminal offence to tamper with the clamp. I need to get insurance cover for just a short time, im thinking of swoping my mk1 estate insurance over then swopping it back but each change costs £20 so that would mean £40, there must be a better way of doing it
mk3cokebottle Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 phone the clampers and cos there is no tax on it the cost is now £260 ie £100 release fee and £160 cos it aint taxed. sambo Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 I cant believe this. The car is outside dads house in a small, quiet square. Not doing anyone any harm. If it was parked in a busy road, i could understand but there is no problems parking there at all. Some people are just busy body losers with nothing better to do with thier lives. Makes me sick.
mk1estate Posted January 6, 2011 Author Report Posted January 6, 2011 Right the story so far.... i have to get a tax disc in my hand by midday today or it will cost the £260 if i can get a tax disc its only £100 for the release fee, if i do nothing it will get towed away and cost a mertgage to get it back. as it happens it still has an MOT and the car has been on scorn but i can only find the bottom bit of the log book which i hope is enough to tax it with, just need to get some insurance on it and i hope then a tax disc. I cant apply on line as i need a tax disc by midday and doing it online takes a week for it to artrive, they wont accept anything other than a tax disc. Any ideas on a temporary insurance policy ?
martinmk2 Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 put three of your own clamps on the remaining wheels so they cant lift it.
mk1estate Posted January 6, 2011 Author Report Posted January 6, 2011 Managed to get a 1 day insurance for just £27 then went down the post office and taxed it for £68 then phoned the clampers paid them £100 and they promised to un-clamp it this afternoon. I will stick it back on my drive then get a refund on the tax lol then its up for sale
FredTransit Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 One more thing you may look forward to, if it's taxed, when the insurance runs out you could be up for a fine from the DVLA for being uninsured! It's the new rule that came in at the start of January. SORN it, you don't need insurance. Taxed, it needs insurance. The DVLA are checking the MID for uninsured vehicles and fining the reg'd keeper regardless of if they are on the road or not.
Noodles Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 The DVLA do patrol in their vans with scanners on looking for cars with no tax, had a few up my road.
Ken B Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 There used to be a particular road in a town i used to live in which had a fair number of untaxed cars parked on the grass verge along it. They all thought as the cars weren't actually on the road they were safe. Along comes DVLA, and clamped about 8 of them. It made the lcoal paper at the time. The verge is still classed as the highway of course. As far as I'm aware DVLA no longer has a clamping department, its all done on their behalf by outside contractors. So the more they find the more commission they get.
