PaulMags Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 Bought this from a firm called JMC Motorsport a few years ago and paid a few hundred quid for it because it was suppose to be one of the best. Spent all weekend putting it right. It was suppose to be for hydraulic clutch but had to rearrange the top of the pedal which took me nearly all day to get it right, then after the 5th time of putting it all back together with the throttle pedal the brake pedal was only a few mm away from it. So then i had to cut a clutch pedal out of another pedal box and scarf that in to use as the brake pedal. Nothing is ever straight forward
w p e Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 ? whys the cylinders upside down? and the so called gp4 throttle peddle is the worst out thereits the most horrible cable pull there is apart from that unless you have a genuine p/box all these after market things are a nitemare
GJUK Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 I bought a pedal box which was an original converted to bias. Not sure how good it is YET. but being orginal you're half way there (I hope!)
turnover Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 does look shit Paul and same as i said in your restro thred why are the cylinders upside down ,you wont beable to bleed them mate
sambo Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 Mate, i have had alot of probs with mine. When i got the car, it had HUGE Porsche brakes on it but i was never happy with the braking performance of it. So, i decided to take the pedal box out and have a look after trying to bleed my new calipers. The bloody box was welded in which got things off to a fun start! Then i discovered that the balance bar thread was damaged and i was only getting 3 turns in total for adjustment. The fronts were getting hardly any movment. The bolt holding the clutch clevis to the pedal was clouting the rear brake clevis too. So, i cleaned up the thread, set the balance correctly and noticed last night that the clutch M/C rod is bent! The pivot points on the pedal are all wrong so i sorted that last night. Now the front master cylinder rod is sticky and is not returning very quickly! Its just one thing after another. Hopefully im getting there! Can anyone tell me after watching the vid below if the front master cylinder will be ok? If its under hydraulic pressure will it return correctly? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVsTskslsCs it just returns SOOOO slowly!! I might make a comprehensive vid soon, while the box is on my bench showing how to set them up as alot of people have problems with them.
w p e Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 sam for the sake of £30 i would change the cylinder or at least strip and clean it out
turnover Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 as wayne said change cylinder for what they cost
sambo Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 I didnt know they came apart? The Girling ones are £50 a pop too !
Essexboy Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 I bought one from Burtons for my 105e! £200 good fit but there was somthing wrong with the pedal where it meets the master cylinder which was locking the brakes on! thanks to Wayne its all good now! got the grinder out i believe
Tom Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 I fitted a return spring on mine as the pedal weight was enough to hold the brakes on slightly
PaulMags Posted February 10, 2011 Author Report Posted February 10, 2011 For those who,s asking why are the cylinders upside down there is'nt a specific way they should go in ,there easier to work on as the lines are underneath and you aint going to fook your hands up and the fluid goes direct into the pipes.most rally cars are done this way Mark solloway builds every car like this also alimax have used this procedure and have never had problems.drivers pedal box is set up this way and has'nt had any problems.so unless i have any problems myself this is the way i'm going for now.
turnover Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 ive never seen it that way Paul, but every days a school day
PaulMags Posted February 11, 2011 Author Report Posted February 11, 2011 ive never seen it that way Paul, but every days a school day m8 when alwyn told me to put it together this way i was questioning myself but carried on and done as he said then when you asked why they were like that i asked the question myself and thats what i was told,i have faith in him he's built too many cars.
w p e Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 my findings show that a cylinders gravity fed and when upside down theres no weight in the fluid to gravity feed and if left for a while the fluid runs back down the pipe to the feed pot and as the pots never full to the brim air can get in the system when left long enough as air rises. my findings anyway. i have two original ford bias box's with the orignal throttle pedals and brake /clutch peddle. think i better get copying
Retromotorsport Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 Mark solloway builds every car like this : I'd beg to differ on that.. dont think i've seen Mark, or anyone else fit them upside down
Retromotorsport Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 Infact..i've just had a look on Marks site ...and yep, all the fittings are at the top.. http://www.historicrallysport.co.uk/ima ... ch5321.jpg http://www.historicrallysport.co.uk/ima ... en4803.jpg
turnover Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 thats what i thought as ive never seen them like that and have never fitted this way,as Wayne said Paul ,the fluid is gravity fed so its not going to work very well ,get them swapped round the other way, your from Wales not Austrailia
105Ian Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 I have the master cylinders mounted upside down on my pedal box due to lack of space , once bleed out they work fine . But have to say they where a pain in the arse to bleed out and if I had a way of changing them so they could be mounted normally I certanily would .
PaulMags Posted February 11, 2011 Author Report Posted February 11, 2011 Mark solloway builds every car like this : I'd beg to differ on that.. dont think i've seen Mark, or anyone else fit them upside down well thats funny cos mark showed alwyn how to do them in the first place maybe he's changed his ways who knows and i'm building my car the way alwyn says as he's had enough experiance and puts all his boxes together like this so if it works as it should i'm happy
PIG Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 not sure about the cylinders but i always mount mine the other way round paul but as said if it works it works mate.there is always issues with peddle boxes unless you get gartrac items as they are the best period followed by the r.a.c.e items.
Darran Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 As i always say on these threads GARTRAC do the only ones that work. Look at most group4 rally cars etc..... Sorry Paul but i think the cylinders are up side down too:(

Sorry Paul but i think the cylinders are up side down too:( yes m8 thats ok but i have to try it out and like i've said if it works ok then i'll leave them like that but if not its no problem to turn them back around. I no gartrack 's are the better ones but ricksy makes them for them to there requirement so i am told and makes alot of the of ones thats floating about but his name is never put down to them

turnover Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 i got mine from tichard at prepfab when i built mine and had no issues, basically looks factory
