BIG G Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Anyone else use a panhard rod on a english axle. I have 21/2" lowering blocks and on the track the back dosnt feel quite right. i will make my own rod and tower so not botherd whitch ones work or not just whether the panhard rod does the job or not any advice welcome.
Tom Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 all day long mate. my last one must have worked cos i managed to rip it off the body. its amazing how much it tightens up the back end
Twinkle Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 was thinkin bout this myself the other day are they really that good?
Jimsiss Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 I might have to get one for when I'm drifting
Danmex Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Sheared mine off the axle during a serious sideways moment, but they do make a hell of a difference
Doc Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 theres one fitted to the back of my FWD Prefect Dunno why ?
erick Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 A panhard rod is one of the first jobs I will be doing over the winter, stop the escort shaking it's arse all over the place.
Fiesta Steve Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 theres one fitted to the back of my FWD Prefect Dunno why ? Its the only thing that prevents sideways movement of the rear beam. Take it off of your fiesta ( or 100e ) and you will know about it !!
BIG G Posted September 20, 2006 Author Report Posted September 20, 2006 so looks like i better get on the guiloteen and sheet bender at work then i allready have the rod ends and the seamless 1" tube for the rod.First job for the nearing winter i thinks

scruffythefirst Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 I could do with one for my capri too, there isn't a lot of room between the axel and the petrol tank tho

Take it off of your fiesta ( or 100e ) and you will know about it !! had one snap on my mk1 fez a few years back!! was an interesting drive home to say the least deffo shakin that ass
Doc Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 they were standard on fiestas mate thats that cleared up then.
mk2 stu Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 Definately mate, sorts out sideways movent of axle although not quite as accurate as a watts link, its an easy operation and shouldnt take too long at all, i reccommend an adjustable tower version from ral des.
RallyOrange Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 An absolute must for hard driving!! just ensure you strengthen the boot floor area for the most common style of tower, as they do tend to crack the boot floor area. or if you can, fit the GRP 4 multi piece one, this is a tricky part to fit as you have to drill a hole through the chassis, to allow a tube to pass through, to weld to the inner wheel tub, along with several other gusseting pieces and strengthening shapes. But you will notice an improvement in the handling without a doubt, which ever one you fit.
Tom Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 so do i need to brace the boot floor a bit bud?
RallyOrange Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 Yeh, a bit of steel plate about 1.5mm thick minimum and about 1ft in length, working away from the back seat area, which is rolling up the axle tunnel area (on the top) coming backwards towards the rear valance, by about 1ft wide sloping up the chassis side of the boot floor, you don't have to lap over the top of the chassis, but you can if you want. This is a tricky shape to mould, but a couple of cuts in the right area will do it, which will be relevent when laying the sheet steel in that area. That should cure any future problems, as long as you make a good job of fitting the panard rod tower to the underside boot floor, but more importantly the chassis area.
Tom Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 my rod tower is just welded, wrap around style, to the chassis rail
RallyOrange Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 just keep a close watch on the boot floor area, above where the tower is. It depends on the road surfaces and how hard you corner it, also how often you do it. I'm only recommending the strengthening, as a preventative measure chap.

BIG G Posted September 21, 2006 Author Report Posted September 21, 2006 rally orange i will deffo strenghten the floor of the boot where the tower is this is something im going to design well and fit well to as if a jobs worth doing and all that. Dont they make A frame kits for capris to sort axle location out.
