worton75 Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 As i'm looking to sell my VW camper around August time (going away in it 1st as holiday booked) i've started thinking about a replacement toy. Always liked a MK2 escort (or a Mk3 capri) so have started looking through this forum / ebay (anywhere else?) for a rough pricing guide and have noticed that MK2's seem to be more expensive than MK1's, why is this? Is the MK2 that much better (i know this might cause an argument but.....) I have a toy budget of £2.5k ('ish) to play with and thought this would get me a base model road car but apperently not yet looking around it seems that i could proabaly get a MK1 for this price. Should i be looking more at a project for my budget? Is my budget to low? Maybe i should settle (?) for a capri instead?
BaileyMex Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 I would say they are probably about the same on the desirability front, I have had both MK1's and MK2's and there both great cars I think at the end of the day it comes down to personal preference
Admin Vista Posted June 22, 2011 Admin Report Posted June 22, 2011 Both good cars but value wise it depends on which model (and perhaps more importantly what spec) you're looking for. 2 doors fetch more than four doors (in both mk1 and 2 guise) A hi spec car will command a higher price than a low spec one in equivalent condition regardless of which one is the mk1 / 2 Good Mk1 RS & Mexico models fetch more than their equivalent condition mk2 RS & Mexico brethren (with the exception of the Mk2 RS1800 wild card) Good mk1 and mk2 equivalent spec / model cars can fetch similar money Any similar spec good condition car will be worth more than an equivalent rough one regardless of which one is a mk1 or mk2
Big_man Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 They're both great, but I suppose it would depend on how the car in question was styled
PaulMags Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Mk2 All day long Why are you looking for a mk1 then boyo.I no you wanna be like me and the rest of the boys
Savvi Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 I think it seems to be a age thing I grew up and had a mk1 as my 1st car when the mk2 came out as normal i didn't like it thought it was too "boxy" obviously the youngsters grew up on the mk2 so think they are better As said i think it's a matter of taste, in my eyes the mk1 is worth more then a mk2 others feel differantly !!!! Good luck in your search there seems to be some good bargains out there at the moment prices seem to have gone done in the last 12 months
RossMK2 Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 if i had to pick a mk1 or mk2 i wouldn't possibly be able to decide. i think they now go for around the same price for similar models
BaileyMex Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Mk2 All day long Why are you looking for a mk1 then boyo.I no you wanna be like me and the rest of the boys
mk2 mike Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Mk2 All day long ^^^^ What he said I've always prefered the look of the mk2 over the mk1, but a mk2 was my first car so maybe subconsciously this is why, like Savvi said? That and the fact the mk2 has 24% more glass which makes it safer Mine was around your budget and it was the first clean 2 door i'd seen in a long while below £3k. You can deffo get a 4 door for that though
Lardy Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Get yourself a MK1 .....CAPRI best looking osf and they stand out at the shows as every one has an escort
banarama Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 MK1 CRAPI VERY NICE CAR/THIS IS A ESCORT DEBATE
D Warren Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Defo mk 1 if its standard body(no bubble arches) but if done rite mk 2s look the nuts forest arched
worton75 Posted June 23, 2011 Author Report Posted June 23, 2011 I think it seems to be a age thing I grew up and had a mk1 as my 1st car when the mk2 came out as normal i didn't like it thought it was too "boxy" obviously the youngsters grew up on the mk2 so think they are better : Might be as the neighbour had a Mk2 RS and the person behind us had a Mk2 mexico,i was about 10 or 11 and just remember there being a lot of Mk2's around at that time (Mid 80's) Will have to keep looking around (although need to sell the camper 1st)
scootlife Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 I always preferred mk2s when i was younger , and then had one as my first legal car back in the 80s. first and only one, and have had many mk1s and currently own a mk1. I prefer a standard body mk1 but do like a forest/box arched mk2
rallyesport04 Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 i prefer the mk1 to look at its far more better looking an the mk2 is more useable as a daily feels bigger inside has more extras like intermitant wipers a propa glove box mirrors you can see in etc the windows de mist straight away unlike the mk1 if i had to choose a toy the mk1 wins by a mile as a daily it would have to be the more practical mk2
Davewrc Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 I grew up with niether since I was born in the 1980's. By the time I was old enough to like cars they were mostly in scrap yards. My mum bought a new Escort 1997 and I happened to find a mk1 escort repair manual in my garage. I could'nt believe what they used to look like. So a few years later I got my first car and became interested in messing with them. I was in WH Smith reading Fast Ford and Max power ETC and I seen Classic Ford magazine. On the cover was "Escort Heaven" and below was a black and white bubble arced Mk1 Escort. It was one of the best looking cars I'd ever seen but I would be another 5 year until I got one. On reflection instead of buying a mk3 fiesta as my first car I should have just got a mk1 escort and at the time (around the year 2001) I could of had a cheap RS I was also aware of the mk2 but it did'nt strike me like the mk1 did, always reminded me of the mk1 golf from the front.
dacar Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 My opinion is that the Mk1 is a nicer looking car by a slight margin however the Mk2 is a more refined and better built (albeit slightly). My friend has a Mk1 and I have a Mk2 and when we are out driving the Mk1 gets slightly more attention but he admits that mines drives better and is more comfortable. Both are similar spec, ie both RS2000. That said I would prefer a Mk1 but I'm more than happy with my Mk2 so its whatever you can afford at the time I suppose. haha bet this is a great help....... NOT
worton75 Posted June 26, 2011 Author Report Posted June 26, 2011 Cheers for the replys guys and girls. I would prefer a MK2 as ideally it will (hopefully) end up as my daily where as the wife prefers the look of a MK1 and as there is only 1 boss in our house it will depend on what the daughter prefers (although i'm sure that will change when the sons old enough!)
RETRO_AL Posted June 26, 2011 Report Posted June 26, 2011 I have always prefered mk2s,i bought the mk1 because it came up at the right time with a good spec but i always wanted a mk2 hence why i now have a mk2 Get the one YOU like, both go sideways
