Cars, Horses and cyclists???

Little debate for the afternoon for everyone Just had a snotty text off my mate saying my dad was being an A**e hole by over-taking my mate and her mum whilst the were riding there horse's down the road. And according to her, horse's have more rights on the road than cars

 

So my question for you lot is this........who has greater rights on the roads, cars, horse' or cyclist'??

 

 

IMO, id say cars, i agree that horse's and cyclist' used roads wayyy before cars, but im still in the frame of mind that, who pays the road tax is the one who has the rights (is that just me??)

 

Horse riding in feilds, cyclist's on cycle paths or paths ?

 

 

(Not meaning to offend any of the above parties, but that text ticked me right off, especially the "horse's have more rights on the road than cars" )

They have equal rights to use the road but must also follow the highway code.

 

Drivers are entitled to overtake providing they do so in a safe manner.

 

 

Horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles. Be particularly careful of horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles especially when overtaking. Always pass wide and slowly. Horse riders are often children, so take extra care and remember riders may ride in double file when escorting a young or inexperienced horse or rider. Look out for horse riders’ and horse drivers’ signals and heed a request to slow down or stop. Take great care and treat all horses as a potential hazard; they can be unpredictable, despite the efforts of their rider/driver.

Just rang my dad to tell him what she text me, and according to him the horse's were 4 abreast accross the road, one by the curb, and the last horse, on the white line

 

Took him and 15 other cars 30 minutes to get passed them all

 

 

 

You can't tell me that was right, even if they are aloud on the road

Below is the Highway Code for Horse Riders - the rules that they must observe/obey when riding on public highway:

 

RULE NO. 53 in the Highway Code

 

When riding on the road you should

 

•keep to the left

•keep both hands on the reins unless you are signalling

•keep both feet in the stirrups

•not carry another person

•not carry anything which might affect your balance or get tangled up with the reins

•keep a horse you are leading to your left

•move in the direction of the traffic flow in a one-way street

•never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends

They may have a right to use the road and I am always considerate to Horse riding pillocks but they have no right to abuse the privilege. Bloody horses on the road................ggrrrrrrr

Im still sure if it was down to the horse' choice, they'd prefer to being in a feild eating lovely grass, not being riden on around roads with loud noise's which spook them

What we do have however, is idiots on bikes who insist on riding on the road, even where the cycle track runs alongside

my wife and kids have horses but to hold cars up for 30 mins is a joke why did they not stop on a bit of grass and let the cars go.sometimes my wife will ride two a breast but only if out with the kids to guard them from some mad drivers .the people you talk of give other horse riders a bad name ,but that is the same with anything.but all please always think that could be your wife or kids on that horse and unlike us they sit on something that can be out of control and has no metal box to save them...

i see both side's (or all 3) to this.

my mrs,trace, is a horse person who lives for horses, works with horses, has moved to other countries to work with olympic teams and all that horse stuff that i don't understand. 5 years ago, she was taking some girls out for a hack. they had to use the road as the bridleways no longer provide a direct route from anywhere to anywhere!

anyway, a car came over the crest of a hill to see horses, 4 in single file, with my mrs at the back.

he hit her horse at 60 mph, after skidding for 80 odd foot. when i turned up after a call from the police, i found the road closed and i could see a body in the road with a blanket over it.

the feelings i got that moment stay with me when i see people on the road on horses. horse riders don't choose to ride on roads with cars rushing by!

trace is ok now, but can't walk without pain killers. very lucky and still works with horses (nutter!!!)

i used to race cycles, and didn't learn to drive until later than all my mates because, in a town, a bike is generally quicker if you can ride it well.i used to train a couple of hours each morning and got all sorts of nutty drivers nearly killing me. but i had a right to be there, just like horsey people!

now i'm a petrolhead and the roads are mine......until i see a horse or cyclist!!! simple!

There are tossers on or in every type of road transport. Personally I try to be courteous and treat everyone the same. We have all have equal rights on the road but there are those who believe that they are more equal than others. Some people are just dicks., in a car, on a bike or on a horse.

decent discussion going, nice to see. Overheadcam has the right idea, everyone just needs to get along and think of others. They all have rights to use the road as long as they dont take the piss then its all fine.

The horses shouldnt have been four abreast and as soon as they realsied there were vehicles should have gone back to pairs but theres always people that spoil it for others. Cyclist, of which i am a keen one, do tend to get a bad rep. Again they shouldnt take up the whole road but dont have to ride in a cycle path if they dont want to (highway code, If I'm travelling along at over 20mph on my road bike i dont want to be stopping at crossings and be on a rubbish path i want to crack on on the road)It often happens that when ridding in the country side we ride 2 abreast, sometimes 3 if its a nice open road so we can have a chat, but as soon as we see a car we drop down to single file to let it pass. WE dont want to have to cycle in single file when we maybe dont see a car for 20 mins, obviously dropping into single file for blind corners etc.

If you just give people a second or two to move out of the way then you normally can get past, if they dont move when they have seen you then they are the idiots that ruin it for everyone. Having said all this, when I'm on my bike i hate all car drivers and when I'm in my car i hate all cyclists. sure it would be the same if i was on a horse!

Horses I don't mind on the road, but the riders are a pain in the arse! Yes I know you have rights and you are allowed on the road but they need to remember there is a highway code, and most of the time they seem to ignore it. Had a couple of rude comments from horse riders in the past. Cyclists seem to be ok but I'm in the country so its maybe more of a problem for people living in towns and cities.

I ride horses, and drive a car, we have to ride on the road to get to the majority of bridle paths, some people do not think about the horses they are riding past, luckily mine is good as gold or i would have been in all sorts of trouble in the past, with idiots driving past so closely i could put my foot through their window, or so fast they must have been running from someone... The majority of riders will ride single file but i agree you do get some riding side by side chatting away without a care in the world. Everyone i.e. walkers, cyclists, horses are entitled to be on the road, whether you pay road tax or not, just everyone needs to be curtious, perhaps a thank you once in a while too from all wouldnt go a miss.

es we all know horses have been around longer than the car but the roads are made for cars nowdays and in my opinion if they ride 4 abreast they are really asking for trouble not to mention giving the decent horse riders a bad name. Me..i will always slow down not for the rider but the poor old horse

Where i live we get alot of horses come past , sometimes 10 or 15 at a time due to being on the local stables hack root and must admit they are all very polite and if you meet them the horses are pretty bomb proof and dont startle and tend to plod on past you or pull on a grass bank and let you past . But there is one man who `trains` race horses , he only has 1 acre of ground so uses the roads to excercise his horses , if you meet him he will go mad shouting at you to move and shut your engine off because he cant control the horses, he has been kicked off his horses a few times and my dad has caught them for him in the past.In my opinion there is no way he or that type of horse should be allowed on the road at anytime, they are not safe for other road users.

I speed up for horses thats if they haven't shit all over the road. The riders should have poo bags to clean the shit up like i do when i walk the dog .
