Savvi Posted November 25, 2012 Report Posted November 25, 2012 As from the 18th November 2012 any car built before 1960 is now mot excempt, but must be in a roadworthy condition to be used on the road ................. i was wondering how long it will be before the ads started..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/classic-car-/ ... 20cdc4be78 Years tax, mot excempt .................. but has brakes leaking fluid I can really see someone getting hurt through this, anyone else feel the same ?
banarama Posted November 25, 2012 Report Posted November 25, 2012 to right they should leave it as it is MOT
Stiggy Posted November 25, 2012 Report Posted November 25, 2012 What did you expect. Wait for the Flintstone specials. Or. Don't smoke on the way home has a small fuel leak in passenger compartment.
jamie Posted November 25, 2012 Report Posted November 25, 2012 What did you expect. Wait for the Flintstone specials. Or. Don't smoke on the way home has a small fuel leak in passenger compartment. That's a good point.
puddy Posted November 26, 2012 Report Posted November 26, 2012 Mot is only really good for day of test , apart from corrosion which I think is 6 months. So are you only gonna buy a car that was mot'd VERY recently ? If I was buying a pre-1960 car,I would still check it over the same whether it was mot'd or not, called common sense. puddy
Savvi Posted November 26, 2012 Author Report Posted November 26, 2012 I agree, i have a 58 minor which has been in a garage for over 20 years, in theory i can now tax and use it ................ no way will it get used until everything is done as it should be, but then i've been in the motor trade all my working life. I think whats going to happen though is people will buy and just use until something happens, we all know not everyone looks after their cars as they should, i've driven many a customers car with no brakes yet they couldnt see what was wrong Can of worms comes to mind !!!!
Admin Vista Posted November 26, 2012 Admin Report Posted November 26, 2012 I agree, i have a 58 minor which has been in a garage for over 20 years, in theory i can now tax and use it . Not really as you still have a legal obligation to make sure it's safe for use on the road and if it isn't you will be prosecuted. I see some of the sense in the exemption for pre 1960 vehicles as many of them wouldn't pass the letter of a modern MOT anyway, which makes much of the test redundant. Perhaps it could have been better done though, requiring them to have a biannual safety inspection or something.

True, I have worked on cars that are only a couple of years old that would make you cringe, one in particular was a Ford C max ,no brakes, put it on the ramp, the pads had worn away completely and the piston had worn through the disc until all you could see was the vanes of the vented part of the disc, this was driven in by a doris customer with kids in the car ! Not just Classics mate you have to have common sense to drive. puddy
bigglesmk2 Posted November 26, 2012 Report Posted November 26, 2012 I think its bad idea because people don't use their brains anymore..... ....some der brain is gonna get their fingers burnt
bomber1 Posted December 4, 2012 Report Posted December 4, 2012 i thought that if the vehicle had been off the road ie not taxed and insured for a period of time it would still need moting before it could go back on the road. this would stop cars being dug out of hedges etc going on the road without being road worthy.
monkeymoreton Posted December 4, 2012 Report Posted December 4, 2012 so how many pre 60 cars are we going to see with a cloud of smoke and a strong scent of petrol plus parts hanging off. i'm not suprised modern cars are just as bad as old cars as people don't even know what a service is or that your have to change the oil now and again these sort of people should be off the road.
