just wondering what people have found from previous owners/mot bodges on there classics? I found this on my mk5 cortina estate when I took the passeneger wing off to replace it

 

 

all of that was full of fibreglass and metal plate

That's a massive hole to bodge with fibreglass ,v v bad to do that then sell it on!!!

Tbf, it looks like it's been there for a fair few years and is obviously an mot bodge from back in the 90s, the previous owner to the guy I got it off was an old gent so I doubt he knew :/ still got to take the drivers side wing off and see what horrors await me under there

I had a red 4 door mk2 that had an old newspaper and plaster of Paris in one of the rear arches, mental why people do such things

Yep it does make you wonder why they go to such efforts to do such a good bodge when it would take just as much to actually repair it properly :L my rear arches were made mostly of filler as well :L

The 1100's old wing/front panel was pretty bad

 

 

 

 

 

The front bit ended up coming off seperate

 

 

 

 

Consisted of, corrigated iron, what looked like horse hair, but would guess it was fibre glass

 

But luckily was just a wing, so easily replaced

17 plates in passenger front floor

seam sealered on plate on chasssie

m6 bolts holding in drivers seat throught rust

pop rivets holsing on driver rear tub,

filler built splash panels

scotch bright used as a win fill panel for wing closer

seat belts in rear just suck in parcel shelf

bored of the list now

The joy of owning old cars remember they used to be family transport so no passion just a quick cheap repair usually done by a mate down the pub i know my ole man knew a few so called mechanics from down the pub when i was a kid The fun of old cars is repairing them i find

I've also seen cornflake boxes, cattier bags, chicken wire, expanding foam, newspaper, and even cement used to bodge up old cars.

I see a lot of work you guys do on your resto's and I'm envious of the workmanship and skills

But then seeing what some people get away with and hide away, I suddenly feel a lot better! My welding may not look that pretty, but at least I know it's metal underneath years ago I was involved in an accident in a viva which had an inner wing similar to the one at the top of this thread, and the front wheel came up through the floor and touched the passenger seat where I was sat, needless to say I had a sore foot afterwards!!!

back in the day when you could buy a mk1 escort taxed n tested for £200

i will admit i had next to no money working for tyreservices gb

me and a work colleague used to buy cheap fords now exensive ones!,

and fill top plates with plastic padding and newspaper the same with sills and capri a pillers

im owning up here!! im not proud but back in those days as said i didnt have a pot to pi** in and i knew so many places, car dealers as well that just filled bodged and used so many tricks to sell a dog bent mots were rife then....i cant be the only one thats gonna own up!

of course nowadays everything i do or have done is done meticulosley

god i sound old!!! and I WILL ADD IM BEING HONEST HERE IM NOT PROUD ....but speak to most people in our hobby and the stories of cut n shuts and bodges etc were commonplace back in the 70s and early 80s

i bet it still goes on! i remember a mate and his old man used to buy the crap off big car dealers and bodge it up and sell it on.all the above and more got done to cars instead of doing it correct.arthur daley was their hero expanding foam was a great invention for filling rotten sills so you could put a skim of filler over the top.everything got coated in underseal and then some dust thrown on top so it didn't look so fresh.

Me and my bruvva pulled an A60 Oxford from a barn and made the rear lower wings from rolled up newspaper,chicken wire and filler....

We fibreglassed the front wings and then rattle canned it.... Was a good job

The guy who bought it from my bruvva 2 years later found our bodges and phoned to complain.... Lol

But again we were skint!

Ive seen some funny things on mine...

 

a repair plate welded over the top of a rotten repair plate, that had been welded over another rotten repair plate

 

 

This side was clearly on show but the other side had been plated over, behind the plate it looked very similar to this

 

 

one of the front wings, with tons of filler in it

 

 

 

the best of all is the gearbox tunnel which has had the crap knocked out of it to the point where it has split and been bodged with some kind of silicone sealant

 

 

I really cant wait to see what other delights are in store

I remember when I was young and naive, welding a pair of strut tops on my RS2000 with an arc welder

One of my old mk2s had a completely cardboard floor that was 'disguised' with stone chip paint on both sides lol.

 

Mind you, BMW e46 M3 CSLs are like this from the factory too so maybe it's not such a bad thing. Weight saver! Lol
