Hi all i have been speaking to a production company i know someone who works there and over the next three weeks they are concentrating in coming up with car related tv programmes to air on national geographic channels and such like, i have been in the motor trade for 17 years and as i said to them the only way to see what people want to see i.e car enthusiasts on their screens is to ask them so dont be shy i need as many ideas as possible to put to them to see what would work and what wouldnt, dont worry if its a crazy idea tell me about it it may just work ! post ideas up here or pm me with details and ideas you have and if one of yours is taken on maybe the chance to be involved !

The best car-ish programmes i have seen  imo was Car Sos with the bloke from practical classics magazine and the beetle/campervan crisis thing . I liked them mainly because they were pretty much warts and all , not to much  made up stuff   in them . Main criticism of that VW programmes was the really cheap production , rubbish filming sound etc , but better than any of that rubbish with that  geezer and indian bloke/canadian bloke . Those programmes were rubbish .

I would like to see a programme were someone looks for a project  looks at cars for sale , buys one and then see how it goes fixing it . On the other hand i would love to see a investigation into stolen classics , perhaps undercover stuff , a sting or 'bait car ' , hidden cameras etc . would be good to make the general public aware of the problem .

Are they looking for different themes each week or just do a series on one thing ?

I worked with Tg for a few months and they were always asking for new ideas as obviously they do something different each week, I think as said above the car security thing would be good as im in that business I know from experience that people just don't realise whats out there and how good it can be ............... it does feel like your banging your head against a brick wall sometimes, be good to do something for peeps to see 1st hand.

I think as also said it needs to be down to earth and something that 99% of people could afford and associate with rather then either some covered up trickery or out of most peeps budget.

I think the search buy and restore or modify would go down well but from a different angle, problem there is filming other people when going to look at cars etc.

I suppose it is difficult to do a genuine buy sell restore thing ,as some stuff has to be pre planed and permision sought etc , but i suppose they could train the buyer to use equipment and do some bits themself with good results  . I would love to see a 'cook report ' style car investigation .

the Mark Evans car resto shows were the best and as said above 'car sos' the best of the new crop.more of the same and less fake drama please.about time we got a ford resto show and less vw stuff :)

all the points above are taken into consideration, one idea the producer did like was doing a series where they find a car under £1000 each week to show that you can get a decent car for little money given the economical climate etc may fit in well, how they would do it i dont know but just one of the ideas he did like it hard with cars theres not anough for car enthusiasts on the tv i dont think being one myself but looking at it like this, wheeler dealers have fairly covered the resto buy and sell game with deals on wheels too, there is strippers cars for cash on nat geo for breaking , there has been the dealership essex based car company, plus banger boys for the banger racers what else is there ? this is what they are trying to decide will update with anything else keep ideas coming thanks !

here is what i have just sent him so you all keep updated any news i will make sure you are all aware of.

heres a few things again from people they want to see and dislike etc:- annoying presenters keeps cropping up ! real life situations more of ! cheesy voice overs with witty banter not always to peoples taste, and people hate with a passion spoilers at the beginging and advert breaks etc it has spoilt the rest of the show so they tell me ! kind of see where they are coming from there. Presenters and voice overs etc should be genuine car enthusiasts, it does come accross to people whether they are or not and people who know what they are talking about. Also money seems to be a problem too or money based unrealistic figures from shows.

a few really good ideas here i think-

1- Firstly the modifying car world is massive, from classic cars to modern day cars. this could incorporate car shows, club meets, seeing what people have done and spent on their cars each week either go for a certain make like volkswagens one week fords the next etc etc so people see what different people are doing there are tens of thousands of people modifying cars every day these could all turn into viewers.

But doing something to do with modified cars old and new will create a huge audience !

2- similar to above i really like the idea of comparing old to new cars so a classic ford sierra against a new Mondeo (being its predessesor)
a mk1 Fiesta against a modern day fiesta. a mk1 1970 gold against its rival GTI of today so comparing the cars may get the attention of both cults old and new.

then maybe mix it up a bit get someone who races like a classic hot rod and races cars or drifts to see how they are modified away from their standard form to make them do the job they are built to do.

3- One person mentioned tracing a cars history back through the owners including the stories that may be attached to them. but i think that could get quite boring, a program called Car S.O.S did similar recently it was good they paid to restore cars for people as a surprise for their loved ones who have had them sitting around in a garage for a while as funds are tight that was an interesting program as it was all real life
situations like finding someone a car for a grand each week would be.

i really like the modifying cars idea, comparing old to new and finding or sourcing cars for a grand and going to look at them for customers and finding the bargains etc these are really good ideas let me know what you think !

regards

Good shows - desert car kings, Fast and Loud

bad shows - nearly all the UK ones, especially Wheeler Dealers and that one with that Bold Cockney fool

Nothing more annoying than all the fake scripted stuff

As said: grease monkeys, counts customs.

Basically what I like is programmes that do up/modify/ restore cars.. But where they show the work taking place.

Grease monkeys does that with some humour involved.

Unfortunately counts customs doesn't show the work involved but has good outcome.

Wheeler dealers is all fake and they don't do the work. The presenter/ salesman mike brewer is an annoying bloke and doesn't seem genuine. And their work is shockingly bad (fresh wheels- lets add rusty wheel nuts)

Chop shop is also fake and something ALWAYS goes wrong cause that's the only way they can find humour or try to keep us watching.

very few of these shows are genuine and very few are not the slightest linked to real life.every show has an unlimited

supply to endless cash and in the real world it just aint like that..classic car restoration to most of us individual people

is making the best of what we have got.none of these programmes show what its like for the majority of us working in

cold cramped garages.making do when we havent got the correct tool for the job etc.there workshops are huge.well lit

well heated and all the correct tools are to hand because its a programme made for tv....although i agree with the

majority of posts on here that car sos is probably the closest to real life.it still isnt.for those of you out there.like me

who battle on in all weathers .cold .hungry and desperate to crack on with the job in hand.in a tiny cramped garage

knowing that your going to get nagged at when you finally call it a night and go inside.we are the real people who

love classic cars.its us they should be making programmes about.

Out of interest if someone like us on here comes up with a usable idea do we get any kind of payment or any rights / credit for the ideas or info , i got involved with this sort of thing in the past and there seems to be no real gain by getting involved .....i know its not always about financial gain but theres alot of money in tv/films etc .....

You gain by saying what you want to watch and getting to watch it. Is it not enough that you get to watch a decent car programme instead of dancing on ice?

I think the only way you will get money from anything like this is if you wrote the script and made the ideas word for word. But then you would be a producer and earn the dough

Liking the ideas you guys have, I love seeing work taking place by what I call home built hero's.

restorations, modifications and short oval racing.

Would be nice to compare modern to old even more if there is a modified old one also

Legalities would be nice to be aired also as people never get told what they can change and how to do it legally (including trailor tests) factual, intelligent and seeing the work done!!!!

Different groups each week would be good, ford, vw, vauxhall, hotrods? Would be nice to be similar set up each week so we know what to look forward to :-) an maybe going to see some nice cars (like a magazine feature on tv?) or builds in progress?

No drama!!!! If I want that I'd watch whatever crap the Doris puts on or American hotrod

How about this.

Pick a car an episode.

Two builders or team of builders and sort of pit them against each other. (Without fake crap drama or made up "incidents")

Could be to see most accurate resto or to win the vote at a marque club night etc etc

Would have to be in fun though or would be rubbish.
