tkracing Posted January 13, 2014 Report Posted January 13, 2014 Dvla asks for build date before 1 jan 73 for historic(free)tax This changes to 1 jan 74 this year ....on 1st April 2014. My car is mk1 escort The v5 date of first registration is 21/06/1973 The vin decoder on this forum works out as nr- June 1973 ....... Is this the (vin decode) date build date the dvla ask for?
Admin Vista Posted January 13, 2014 Admin Report Posted January 13, 2014 If you date of first reg on the V5C is Jun 73, that will be sufficient for DVLA to change the taxation class to historic vehicle after April 1st
Escort Mk1 4 Door Posted January 13, 2014 Report Posted January 13, 2014 sweet i got to do mine when it somes up at was built decmber 73 but is reged 73
stuartp Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 I have been wondering how this is going to work (mine's a june 73)
Admin Vista Posted January 14, 2014 Admin Report Posted January 14, 2014 I have been wondering how this is going to work (mine's a june 73) Go to your local DVLA office (or post the V5C off if it's been closed) and request a change in taxation class to Historic Vehicle. If your car was registered before 1st Jan 74 then there'll be no issue, it's if you're trying to prove that it was built before then that it gets tricky and you need to take proof along.
stuartp Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 but we have to wait until april to do it I guess
HotRodMatt Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 I've read they will require a letter from a club they recognise, such as the Sporting Escort Owners Club confirming its pre '74 build date. I'll be writing off to them come 1st April as mine is a December '73 build. Cheers Matt

If the car is registered before the new cut off date i.e. 31/12/73 you will not need to prove its build date. After all it stands to reason that a car that is registered with them has to have been built already. You will only need to confirm its build date if it was registered after the cut off date
HotRodMatt Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 Yeah was only talking about the cars like mine, built in '73 but registered '74. Cheers Matt
Admin Vista Posted January 14, 2014 Admin Report Posted January 14, 2014 Yeah was only talking about the cars like mine, built in '73 but registered '74. Cheers Matt tax exempt motoring rocks!
HotRodMatt Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 Sure does! My other car is tax exempt too.
stuartp Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 my tax runs out in march - I suppose I sorn it for a month (never ever had a car on sorn before) and then apply for the free disc WOO! makes no difference to me waiting a month, the old bugger only drives when it feels like it anyway
Girl Racer Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 Just checked the first registration on my log book and its 17/06/1974 so I suppose I will have to keep paying tax then!???
Admin Vista Posted January 16, 2014 Admin Report Posted January 16, 2014 Just checked the first registration on my log book and its 17/06/1974 so I suppose I will have to keep paying tax then!??? Look in the how to room to establish your build date but the likelihood of if being built more than 6 months previously is slim.
Girl Racer Posted January 16, 2014 Report Posted January 16, 2014 Ok thanks, bloody annoying isn't it!!
irishtorag Posted January 17, 2014 Report Posted January 17, 2014 the irish system all vehicles over 30 is 56euro a year to tax not bad system oh and don't need tested although id prefer some sort of road worthy test on them not everyone keeps them good and you can always miss something fresh eyes and all that 1
Rallye Posted January 19, 2014 Report Posted January 19, 2014 Go to your local DVLA office. Hurry though, they are all closing. Just checked the first registration on my log book and its 17/06/1974 so I suppose I will have to keep paying tax then!??? You have a nice car to be proud of, it's worth paying for another while. 1
