Dvla asks for build date before 1 jan 73 for historic(free)tax

This changes to 1 jan 74 this year ....on 1st April 2014.

My car is mk1 escort

The v5 date of first registration is 21/06/1973

The vin decoder on this forum works out as nr- June 1973 ....... Is this the (vin decode) date build date the dvla ask for?

I have been wondering how this is going to work (mine's a june 73)

Go to your local DVLA office (or post the V5C off if it's been closed) and request a change in taxation class to Historic Vehicle. If your car was registered before 1st Jan 74 then there'll be no issue, it's if you're trying to prove that it was built before then that it gets tricky and you need to take proof along.

I've read they will require a letter from a club they recognise, such as the Sporting Escort Owners Club confirming its pre '74 build date. I'll be writing off to them come 1st April as mine is a December '73 build. :-)

Cheers

Not true. If the car is registered before the new cut off date i.e. 31/12/73 you will not need to prove its build date. After all it stands to reason that a car that is registered with them has to have been built already. You will only need to confirm its build date if it was registered after the cut off date

my tax runs out in march - I suppose I sorn it for a month (never ever had a car on sorn before) and then apply for the free disc WOO!

makes no difference to me waiting a month, the old bugger only drives when it feels like it anyway

Just checked the first registration on my log book and its 17/06/1974 so I suppose I will have to keep paying tax then!???

Look in the how to room to establish your build date but the likelihood of if being built more than 6 months previously is slim.

the irish system all vehicles over 30 is 56euro a year to tax

not bad system

oh and don't need tested ;)

although id prefer some sort of road worthy test on them

not everyone keeps them good and you can always miss something

You have a nice car to be proud of, it's worth paying for another while.
