Messenjah Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 right here goes , i drive a landrover day to day (havent passed my test yet its in 3 n a bit weeks time) i want a capri and my grandad likes them, he lives in france withmy nan but they fly to and from luton airport (just down the road) quite regularly id say they spend 20/30% of their time here and when they are her ethey hire a car if i buy a capri and he insures it (me as named driver) so that he can use it when he is over here visiting and i can use it for shows and a few weekends and stuff is it illegal for him ot be main driver and me to be named driver ???
alwayssideways Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 Is your grandad still a"UK resident"? ie British passport, drivers license etc etc? If not then you might have trouble with the insurance co. Your best bet would be to ask an Insurance company directly or maybe the DVLA or someone...... Even if they did give you a policy it may still be deemed illegal in the eyes of the law. I know theyre clamping down on things like this now (mainly because it helps them rake in even more money!)
Chelle Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 I think that if your driving it most of the time HE would have to be the named driver and the policy would have to be in your name! We had this problem with my mum insuring my brother as a named driver as he was the one using it when it got stolen! Etc Etc!
mossy Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 just a thought....when they ask for your grandads address and he says france.....They are most proberly going to laugh! But still its worth a try!
Admin Vista Posted June 7, 2006 Admin Report Posted June 7, 2006 truth is what we vote for is irrelevant as it's just our opinion. Best thing you can do is ask the insurance company and be straight with them.
over_head_cam Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 My old dear was in insurance for a long time and this uestion cropped up all the time. Though not technicaly illegal the insurance company can say that the details you have provided are false and that you have been defrauding them of the increased premium that you would have paid if you told them the truth. Thing is that could be classed as fraud, which IS illegal. At best, they'd never know and youll get away with it. If they did find out they could say naughty naughty, give us our money. Or they could cancell your policy (and that would show on the computer records for all the insurance companes to see). At worst they could insist thst you haver commited fraud and inform the authorities. Like has been said before though it's up to you mate. but if you're driving allready and you haven't passed your test then I suppose you won't be too bothered (But if you ran over someone they'd get no compo as you're not insured I guess) Probably
tim Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 it will proberly variary from company to company but any thing did haappen they would use it 2 get out from payin out, ring them and tell them every thing and if u do do it make sure you get it in writing that know all the facts etc
