If they are even thinking about it, then England should give them no choice and chuck them out now anyway! Why are they calling the shots? I'm not a fan of irn bru or haggis anyway ;)

You don't think that dissolution of the United Kingdom might not be in England's best interests either?

I was given a controversial opinion the other day. It went something like (I quote):

"Anyone with a scrap of intelligence up here is dead against it as they know that the resentment born hundreds of years in the past is not the best issue to base the politics of the future on. Unfortunately, the young and the great unwashed that Salmond is targeting with his Brave heart style campaign don't know any better. Plus, there are a lot of them!"

couldn't give a monkeys , better blasting roads up here anyway

But when (as some predict) Scotland is broke and you have no currency to spend (don't presume that the EU will let you use the Euro) on health care, roads, public services etc. Will you give a monkeys then?

I salute your carefree optimism sir....

..though should it all go belly up, I reckon you'll wish you'd shut the stable door before the horse bolted.

A lot of interesting comments and well thought out arguments. A lot of shite comments as well. As a Scot it's hard to see where Alex Salmond bases most of his claims as I just don't get them. I would like to see us staying in the UK as I see us failing with independence. The trouble is he is using the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup to his advantage to the young and not so learned amongst us who have a vote! He is not a popular person to a lot of us but is it enough to secure a No vote? Hope so.

So as voting day draws near and it looks like the scots are swinging toward a vote for independence, our top leaders have gone past hadrians wall to persuade them to stay with us.i have always bemoaned the fact that the scots get a lot of perks that we English don't such as free prescriptions etc and I have always considered that we 'subsidised' the scots BUT I am now reconsidering my views because if Scotland IS costing us so much money then why are Cameron n co so desperate to keep us together? could it be the oil I wonder?

No, it's not the oil, in fact the SNP are massively overstating the revenue that they'll gain from oil. It's how it affects the UK's standing on the global stage, the separation of our banking systems and currency, the political fallout, the separation of the NHS, Defence and Welfare. Who's going to pay for all that? Scotland? And how do you split some of it up? Do they want some of our frigates, destroyers, submarines, planes? Would the sailors and airmen who crew them be prepared to go? Should we surrender them at all? We won't get anything back for the English tax ££ that have been invested in Scotland's development and infrastructure after all.

I confess, I'm growing increasingly worried that by appealing to 16 year olds and the great unwashed and uneducated by pumping up nationalist fervour, old Fish Face is gaining sufficiently to be in with a chance of breaking up the UK. Too many people are likely to vote on "Screw the English B'stards" basis for my liking

I know that not everyone on here is convinced they should be concerned by that but I think it'll be a disaster for both nations, economically, politically and globally.

I was born in England but my parents are Scottish, I went to school there and my brothers and their families both still live there.

It affects everyone in the UK as all countries will feel the impact of it so if the UK is broken up, I think David Cameron has committed political suicide by agreeing to Fish Face's conditions that only people resident in Scotland should get to vote.

Meanwhile, any money I have in Scottish institutions is being withdrawn, I dealt with my ISA yesterday and am discussing my pension with its provider today.

I think it would be bad for Scotland and the rest of the UK if a split were to happen. From what I understand this vote is not for independence but whether to explore it further - is that right?

If so you can understand the "yes" campaign gaining momentum as voting yes or no is fairly easy but when it starts to be explored further and terms etc have to be agreed it probably will not feel quite so simple.

That being said if it did happen I have no doubt that it would cost the remaining UK tax payers more money initially and to some degree damage our standing in Europe although probably not significantly. However I very much doubt that Scotland will be better off or indeed be able to maintain many of the things its residents have grown use to. I might be wrong but it seems like those that would like to be independent are basing a lot of the country's future wealth / power on possible future resources!

With so much at stake, it seems wrong that the vote is as close as it is at the moment - 49/51 - whichever way they vote, almost as many people will be against the decision.

Of course if Scotland does separate, what effect will this have on Wales & Northern Ireland?

No, this is a simple question: independence, Yes or No?

If the vote is Yes a timetable will be set for the break up of the UK and Alex Salmond will spend the next XXX months wringing as much as he can out of Westminster.

What was the Scottish standard of living like before expensive to extract North sea oil was found? apparently the remaining oil reserves are not really known, could be 5 years or 20 years, lots there but some of it near impossible to extract, guess along with the mid East problems thats why the oil companies will favor  Fracking on this side of the border, lots of reserves and cheap (in proportion) to extract! I think we are stronger as the united Kingdom, saftey in numbers in today's uncertain world.

At the moment...   :)

:ykt:

Then it'll be the Basques and the Catalans in Spain, the Kurds in Turkey, Ukraine is already in a state of civil war. Christ there's separatist movements all over Europe, watch them all take heart and go at it hammer and tongs if Scotland breaks away from the UK
