Is this Steering Wheel too Modern for old Mk1?

A few years before I sort of put my Twincam away and forgot about it I had an idea to smarten the interior up to make it look a bit classier.

 

My Twincam is a Deluxe so its equipped with fake woodgrain trim pieces which are in fact decorative aluminium strips with a woodgrain sticker on them. (Very tacky) They go across the dash, along the top of the doors and side windows in the rear and the look is applied around the instruments as well. Its not the proper wood you get on 1300Es like Texr2000s recent pics. It came with a Luisi wooden steering wheel that in the sun has faded to go a bit orange but since the car is orange it doesnt look too out of place but the fake wood trim pieces have all faded at different rates so they are all over the place colour wise.

 

 

Apart from the fake wood the interior looks good as I had the seats completely restored like new. So my great Idea was to change the wheel and was going to get new and real  wood veneer cut to fit within the aluminium strips and for the instruments. (Is there a craftsman word for that kind of work?) I bought this Momo wheel back then when I first had the idea but like the car its just been packed away ever since.

 

 

Because this forum has gotten me motivated to take the cover off the car and start it again I got the wheel out to have a look and now im not sure about it. Its sort of a hybrid wheel to give me the wood look I would have matched to strips if I get that done and leather so its easier to grip. A full wooden wheel in a 45 degree Celsius Australian Summer is hurt pain and burn. The wheel does have a classier look but with the thumb notches it sort of looks more like its meant for a modern Jag or something rather than a classic old Ford? What do you think? Nor is replacing the fake wood with nicer looking veneer original which most potential Twincam buyers would expect but the old stuff is really really poor and tacky that it cant be that bad a non original upgrade? But some are really funny about that sort of thing. Not even sure we would have someone to cut the veneer here anyways, I know in the UK you guys have excellent craftsman for things like that and skilled coach builders etc. You dont hear about that much here. Any recommendations and advice would be most helpful. Thanks

Personally I'd say yes but fashion seems very different in Australia. Few here for instance would fit some of the wheels commonly used in Australia.

Why are you worried about what other people think? Its your car - do what you want and like! If you want to sell it then throw in the original wheel for them to fit or refurbish. I wouldn't tell you what shoes to wear - my opinion is worth diddly squat in that regard!

I more want to know what others think because Im not sure myself. When I thought about doing this I thought it was a good idea but when I got the wheel out and looked at it again I wasnt sure. I want it to look period but now looking at the wheel again im not sure it does. Was after opinions to help sway me one way or other. Once I made my decision I wouldnt car too much what people think, I more interested in helping making up my mind and why people would choose one way over another. That said In the same respect I dont like to do sacrilegious things to it that would decrease its value. My Mk2 is here to stay and will be buried in it but the Twincam if the right offer came along I would let it go. Does that make sense?

Yeah dont worry what other people think. ive got rs recaros in my mk1 and some people say its a stupid thing to do, tbh i dont care, its my car .. i drive it not them

In the UK Just the standard early 3 spoke thin rimmed wheel (below) though many were upgraded to Springalex deep dish style wheels, either when purchased new or by subsequent owners since

Ours had that same wheel although it was long since gone when I bought mine. The orange wood Luisi wheel was on it when I bought it.

i always liked them with a springalex deep dish and TC cars i seen all had them.

I like the wood grain steering wheel kinda ties in with the wood effect trim.

I love to see the 1300e wood trim in a mk1 but most prefer the stripped out street racer look.

1300e wood trim and a 4 spoke rs wood rim wheel is porn for me.

Id agree i think your twin cam would look better with some 1300e trim like mine

That would probably be straying too far from its original trim I think as its very stand out bold. Its definitely nice but never was put on any cars here. I think putting in real wood veneer into the chrome trims covering the fake wood would be as fas as I could probably get away with. The leather/wood wheel would be perfect too if it didnt have bulgy thumb notches which werent really on wheels of the time.
