Warming up

Had a argument with my GF's dad the other day about whether or not its best to let the car warm up before driving it, especially on cold mornings. I think its best to, but he says it causes engine damage etc what you all think?

if you thrash its nuts off when cold then it will do damage

he's really old fashoined when it comes to cars but was saying it wrecks the piston rings to leave it idling for a while , suppose he turns his car off when in traffic jams

A friend of mine had an audi TT (ahem) ...and i remember reading the owners manual and it said when starting the car after a long period of time i.e overnight, DON'T let it idle. Drive the car and dont warm up the engine on tickover. ??

Never race a cold engine, pretty sure thats what the Haynes manual of lies says and being as I don't drive my car any other way it seems all I can do to warm it up is to let it idle

the cams are at most work under IDLE, its best to start it and drive it nicely for a few miles. it may drive like a dog but thats because of past 'warm up' experiences.

 

 

the oil has to thin and circulate, but this happens quicker if te engine has to work a little.

i try not to give it any whack till the temperature gauge has started registering

 

engine doesnt respond quite aswell when its cold but leaving it idleing too long and it gets too hot and dont like that either
