Took my girl out yesterday for a short trip to garage for some servicing, got half way and a real strong smell of petrol coming through vent and car was juddering like no fuels was getting in. So coasted her to garage and my mate lifted carb cover off to find the carb housing was squiting petrol out of a broken seal :( He said very lucky it didn't squirt on a hot part and boom up she would have gone aaahhhh!! :( luckily the service carried on and he ordered in a carb kit to fix it :) so now after new oil, sparks and leads, coil etc she's running sweet.. Although the new shiny parts do stand out a bit in engine bay,so next job get car detailed and a good clean under bonnet :)

Don't get a powder one. Buy a foam one ( AFFF). That foam is just water and soap and wont leave a mess afterwards. You can even just rinse it off the day after.

2 litre preferred.

Whilst well intention-ed most extinguishers are for life preservation ie. knock the fire down enough to allow escape and not vehicle destruction! The old, and now banned Halon systems, were the most effective - the modern equivalents are nearly as good and ideally need to be plumbed in to get the gas right at the seat of the fire - just squirting something under the bonnet might make you feel good but likely to be pointless. If your working on the car, then a hand held powder and / or foam is always advisable as you might be able to hit it early enough to kill it but when driving, then I guess by the time you've smelt smoke or seen fire then taken time to stop and bail out its too late. And don't for gods sake open the bonnet (say) to get a better look - use the time to let your fingers do the dialing!

I've got 2 Halon ones in the garage. An old neighbour gave them me from his night rally days. Got a pair of Oscars for a tenner off him too. Winner!
