M16 Caliper Rebuild

Parcel from Big Red in the UK arrived today.

 

Thought I should add some refurbished calipers when I change the struts so ordered some stainless steel pistons for the job. I read many conflicting claims if they were worth the expense or not. In the end I though that often the car sits idle for long periods that from a corrosion factor that it certainly couldnt hurt going stainless. There was some other evidence to suggest that they transferred less heat to the caliper and fluid and as such reduce fade. This was important from the point that I decided to retain solid disks at the front and not go down the vented spacer route that most adopt these days.

 

The red caliper was just me experimenting with some caliper paint to see if it was too over the top on a Oldskoolford. The car is very much all black and white all over. Under the bonnet I added red Magnacore leads that match the brake reservoir cap just to add a flash of colour cause it was looking a bit bland. I thought maybe expanding that just to give a hint of red on the small part of the calipers that you can see in the 4 spoke wheels. Part of me hesitates as it strikes a bit too Subaru WRX boyracer but Type 16s arent that large and you cant see much of them through the wheel that I may get away with it. I painted the drums the other day but did them in black. I think seeing red all the way around would have been a bit tacky. Black or Red calipers? Need to decide over the weekend.

After all the time you spend masking and spraying the wheels.........................................I think not - silver, blue, black .....ok. Red NO!

If you want to highlight them do them silver, if you want to lose them then black. If you want to go down the red or yellow route then you would also have to purchase matching red furry dice for the rear view mirror and two 8 foot flexi aerials to look a complete twat.....LOL

I dont think the red would be that noticeable just a brief flash of colour really or so I was hoping anyways. Everything on the car is Black and White even down to the number plates and it can be a bit much especially since adding the wheels as they are a bit bright. Silver would probably add too much given how shiny the wheels are. Black of course would be more invisible but it comes done too just trying to add a unique highlight to all the black and white. But going down the furry dice route was just what I was trying to avoid though.

 

 

PS. In my younger days I did have a 4ft CB aerial attached to the bumper of this car. No text and mobile phones thats how you communicated with mates while on the go back then. They would flex while you zoomed down the highway and slap into the rear rubber spoiler when you pulled up. Thats the point the rear spoiler developed its first split lol. Nowadays I think how terrible it would look on the car now but back then I was all alot of fun. One of the gang chatted up a girl on the CB and went on to still be happily married with family to this day. Different times.
