I left home at 3.30 this morning to go to work and gave the daily a bit of a squirt on a quiet stretch of road and heard a noise as though I had driven over a plastic bottle but thought nothing of it.as I pulled into work the temp gauge shot up and steam came from under the bonnet.when I looked in there I discovered that the viscous fan had shattered and put a hole in the rad.being the conscientious kind of bloke I am I stuck my head in the office and told my boss I was going to nip the car back home, change cars and return asap.i was told not to be too long as they are short of men so I filled a huge bottle of water and off I went.long story short I got flashed by a speed camera then used up all the water with just a couple of miles to home.i stupidly thought I could get that last couple of miles and,you guessed it,ground to a rattling halt.the car was eventually towed home and by now it was too late and I was too stressed to return to work.i phoned my boss only to be told I would have to

have a disciplinary hearing because this is my THIRD day off in twelve months!  lifes a bitch.

Goodness me! What an all round totally crappy day you have had. I hope they hear what happened and take that into consideration. If not come live here. You will find work easy. You already speak Engish so your one up on most of the workforce that comes in on 457 visas.

My bosses really couldn't give a stuff about mine or any of the other workers problems, all they worry about is getting the next job done.i have worked there 16 years but that counts for nothing the minute something goes wrong.I would love to live in Australasia mate,my sister lived there for twenty odd years but my wife wont leave England unfortunately . I have walked the dog for two hours this morning trying to build up the courage to inspect the car, trying to convince myself that it may be ok now that its cooled down lol.

Sorry you wouldn't get much sympathy from me as a co-worker or as a boss! The rad damage was obviously bad but against better judgement you chanced it when you could have relayed it later as you eventually had to! Your employer let you go - On Condition - which you breached, no one else's fault. He runs a business to make money to pay you for working there and take profit after - its not a bloody charity. Just cos you were stressed there was no good reason not to go back - as you promised. It might have resulted in a different outcome !

Tbh its no more than the loss of ones nearest and dearest. Have to return to work after 3 days till a week now ! Such an inhuman society

we live in...

I'm sure the lad over the last 16years has done and gone above and beyond his salary on numerous occasions but this shite of an enquiry

after 3 sick days a year is bullshit.

My better half was told she had a stomach ulcer in dec 2014 but died from pancreatic cancer march 2016 !unforeseen and she put her all

into the job ....

Anyway i agree on the part once rad burst the nxt damage was self inflicted and yes a slap on the wrist for saying he would be back

but an enquiry is bull shit tbh in my opinion.. its not a prison but a work place !

precisely paul, its much easier to limp a car home at 3.30 am than leave it until home time and endure the Dartford crossing traffic at peak times.katana I acknowledged the fact that I made the wrong call hence the title of the thread, and my employer didn't let me go as I hadn't clocked in and as such i was under no obligation to return.yes they run a business to make a profit but no business will work efficiently and make money if they don't look after their employees.we haven't had a pay rise in 7yrs and are doing much more work, employees are leaving in droves and they cant get anyone to come and work there anymore,so maybe the problem isn't with the workers?it most certainly isn't a charity.and as you don't know what I do for a living how can you say that just cos I was stressed it was no reason not to return?i can tell you that in my profession being stressed and under pressure you can be a major danger to others.anyhoooo...good news (I think) I started the car up and there are no knocks or rattles, but I do detect the merest hint of white smoke.i will need to replace the radiator, fan and header tank then start and run it under pressure to see if the head gasket is ok.fingers crossed.
