i dont get why theyre marketed as special magnets?

 

surely any old magnet in your sump will pick up stray metal?

 

as long a its strong enough to stay there :-s

you can get magnets to stick to the end of the oil filter as well

We use what we call mag chip detectors in turbine engines, it's essentially a magnetic plug that screws into the lube system in the scavenge lines. Early versions relied on a watchkeeper removing them for inspection and saving any debris for analysis. More modern systems send electronic signals to a monitoring system to warn the operator.

And you'd be surprised at how much crap they collect too, especially after a race

Magnets in a sump or gearbox are an absolute godsend. You should see some of the crap that the magnets used in our racecar gearboxes pick up! They are a great indication as to when something is on its way out and you can quite often catch it before it lets go big stylee! Didnt think they were anything special tho! Should think any magnet would do the job!

 

Everyone should go right now and glue one to the end of their sump plugs!! DOIT DOIT
