Jerrytom161 Posted October 24, 2016 Report Posted October 24, 2016 I inherited a Tran X plated LSD when I bought my mk1 Mexico a 3 and a half years ago This was fitted brand new at the time ( some 7 years ago ) I drove the car for the first time since a full resto was completed at the weekend , and I hate the noise it makes sometimes when driven round corners . It was set up by Jwe engineering in bexley Heath last year , by a very experienced guy in the transmission field I have turned it regularly whilest I was rebuilding the car with the correct oil in the axle . It sounds like a cracking / knocking or banging ... I have been told that this is very common in a plated LSD rather than a quaife ATB version , and really this type of LSD is mainly used for rallying not road use . I am not planning in going rallying or out in the wet or snow !! . Can any osf member help by pointing me in the direction of finding the correct standard 3.77.1 diff that a 1973 mk1 Mexico had ? or unless Hopefully someone has one for sale maybe , preferably in good useable condition . Many Thanks in advance . Dave .
terribletaj Posted October 25, 2016 Report Posted October 25, 2016 I've also got a Tran-X LSD, funny enough it was also JWE that done mine, it made a lot of noise when I first put it in, I changed the oil and added some redline friction modifier to the oil (castol b373) and now its almost silent yet locks up perfectly. It might be worth you trying that first before you go to the expense of buying another diff. 1
deltamal Posted October 25, 2016 Report Posted October 25, 2016 I've got an Atlas Capri plate type LSD fitted in my Mk3, when it was fitted originally it had all new plates etc and used to squeal on tight corners, Ford used an additive (not cheap @ £30+) but it stopped the noise, it has all been set up again recently and I use an additive from ebay, it works just as well!
nosher 64 Posted October 25, 2016 Report Posted October 25, 2016 Same on our Capri.. When it arrived made an awful noise when cornering.. Drained and refilled the diff with the correct grade oil and additive... Hey presto all quiet now.. Good luck.
colr6 Posted October 25, 2016 Report Posted October 25, 2016 My gripper plate diff is worse when your pushing it in and out the garage with a bit of lock on, sounds as thought a shaft has snapped. Sent in for rebuild still the same, waste of £400 really. Quaife ones just as noisy when used hard as a diff should be used.
Jerrytom161 Posted October 25, 2016 Author Report Posted October 25, 2016 Ok , thanks for all your suggestions , will try changing the oil and put an additive ( modifier ) in as suggested by Chris at Jwe first before doing anything drastic Yet .
khanlad Posted October 27, 2016 Report Posted October 27, 2016 I've got a quaife atb, you wouldn't even know it was there

khanlad Posted October 27, 2016 Report Posted October 27, 2016 It locks up, let's you come out on to the high street sideways past the coffee shops, and is a quiet as a mouse! Perfect!

stephens_xpack Posted October 28, 2016 Report Posted October 28, 2016 Watch you don't damage your lips Blowing that big TRUMPET How do you know he has a big trumpet, and that he can reach it?
guido Posted October 28, 2016 Report Posted October 28, 2016 english lesson for me dutch dude: guess Col6 referring too a "loud mouth" Did i pass the test?
khanlad Posted October 28, 2016 Report Posted October 28, 2016 Well I don't want to go into too much detail, a gentleman never tells, but we have camped together before! Hehe
colr6 Posted October 28, 2016 Report Posted October 28, 2016 With reference to blowing ones own trumpet, English lesson no 1. To tell everyone about his own achievements, as Khanlad claims he is perfect. For some reason I disagree
colr6 Posted October 28, 2016 Report Posted October 28, 2016 english lesson for me dutch dude: guess Col6 referring too a "loud mouth" Did i pass the test? Afraid not, see explanation above.
Jerrytom161 Posted October 29, 2016 Author Report Posted October 29, 2016 For now I am going to drain the comma oil I put in diff to start with , and will fill up with Millers LSD gear oil CRXLS75W90Nt nano drive fully synthetic as recommended for a TranX plated diff by Burton Power , which I discover through the paperwork is where the diff was purchased before I bought the Mexico . Fingers crossed it will improve the drive . Thanks for all your input and comments on this post guys . Regards. Dave.
