Hi all

So I'm still finding the tina chokes a bit when sticking my foot down, cleared the crud out the carb freed the piston but still a bit off

Lookin thro Haynes I see my carbs jetted different to what it says it should be.

So main jet should be 92 but mine is 77

Compensating jet should be 112 mines 97

I can't check the accelerator pump jet as the cars at the spray shop

But will that make much difference?

I know it probably won't to the acceleration but I thought I'd check!!

Found a bit of info, Haynes jet sizes are correct carb number should be 33vn2. The number you have quoted is correct C 1863 as fitted to cortina/corsair/classic and Capri so how it's come to have the jet sizes your quoting God only knows. There is no seal on the bottom of pump plunger but may have seal around plunger but can't tell poor drawing. There is a jet at bottom of plunger tube is this clean and is it squirting fuel into Venturi when throttle is opened fully?

I can't see any room for a seal round the piston? I found another carb in a box of bits and that's the same altho the jets are smaller still not exactly correct but a lot closer ( 115 and 97 )

If I remove the carb an push the piston by hand it squirts well but I can't test it in place as the cars at the spray shop at the moment

So got the car back today from the spray shop and yes it's the wrong carb! It is exactly as described above so I thought well I'll stick the second carb I have on it ...

Only to then see the huge knackered linkage mount on the side:(

That's out the question!!

So....

What effects will it have running the current carb that's meant for a 1300 ?!

Well you've already experienced one, poor performance. Also with this would envisage poor fuel economy. More than likely be running on the week side which could result in worse cas sinario, hole in a piston. Things that could be seen would be an increase in engine temp. A rough idea how it was running can be gained by the look of the spark plugs and their colour. In short get the right carb for the car. As suggested before a weber conversion off the 1500gt would be a good move but would also require an exhaust manifold. This will not run to its best ability due to your engine not having the camshaft and larger valves of the GT so if you went the weber way it would need some fine tuning to get the full benefit.

Cheers col

So I emailed a guy Thursday about a new carb anyway, still haven't heard back tho?

So for now I changed the float bowl from my knackered ( but correct carb) into the housing of my original carb so the only thing that incorrect is the choke ( should be 29 but it's 26 ) so I'll run that for a few days an see what difference that makes?! I also ordered a second hand one off ebay ( I know I know!) But it said he took it off a 1500 cortina and it looks right ( and it was cheap!) so we'll see what turns up in the post!!! As for spark plug appearance they look spot on! So let's see what happens!

1500 carbs are meant to be a vn2 zenith. check the gasket where the float bowl reomves from the carb, I had one where that gasket wasn't sealing, causing all sorts of shiz. alternative put a weber 34 ich on it(from memeory-friend has one on his 1500 goes well). should be a like for like replacement weber. double check jet size. orrr just twin choke it but you would need the inlet carb, and a new exhaust for starters.. good luck with it.
