ekjim Posted March 25, 2017 Report Posted March 25, 2017 I'm very impressed when I go down to the drag racing and see pinto powered Escorts and Anglias run in the 12 second quarter time . How useable is a car like this on the road ?
katana Posted March 25, 2017 Report Posted March 25, 2017 Nitrous can always be turned off - as I believe it should be on the road - and turbo boost can be turned down so ultimately these could be quite streetable but a NA motor for that level would be a bit extreme IMO
ekjim Posted March 25, 2017 Author Report Posted March 25, 2017 Sorry I meant to add normally aspirated pinto , was wondering what something like this would be like on the street .
Admin Vista Posted March 25, 2017 Admin Report Posted March 25, 2017 Sorry I meant to add normally aspirated pinto , was wondering what something like this would be like on the street . Hard to live with I imagine, hence most really quick cars are trailered to and fro.
deltamal Posted March 26, 2017 Report Posted March 26, 2017 The N/A YB Cossie engine in my M3 Tina was 265 brake, fitted with which was only used on the strip, with the nos switched on and 80% jets it was over 300 brake and a 13 second car running with full body weight, very drive-able on the road with good mpg, as long as it wasn't floored, then it was an animal!
ekjim Posted March 26, 2017 Author Report Posted March 26, 2017 That's a lovely engine there deltamal , what power did it make on the motor ?
Snapper Posted March 26, 2017 Report Posted March 26, 2017 So many variables, Injected? If not carbs are less tractable Was it running 100+ octain? Camshaft that produce no torque below 4K are a pain on the road. I run FR32 and it's a good cam that max torques at 4K and peak bhp is 5.2k, easy to drive The RL31 engine is noticeably sluggish under 4K, to the extent I had to seriously concentrate on which gear I was in and what revs I had. I would assume that an N/A Pinto that can do 12's in let's say an Escort would be challenging on the road. I have in the past been an occasional participant in a Rally team that ran a 196bhp Pinto and before a trailer was available it was an ok drive home. It's a difficult question without a complete understanding of the spec of the car in question.

Interesting comment about the RL31, I've had one of those in my mk1 since about 2005 or 6 and don't find that at all. In fact it pulls well from about 2800, so pretty much spot on where Kent list its Powerband as starting.

That was on the dyno, 265 brake, 244 torque, so 30 brake or so off that @ the wheels, got a tweaked 2.9 Cologne 12 valve in it now, still has a very usable 185 brake @ the wheels....

In my car it was probably the bike carbs not set up properly, compression was about 10.7 to 1 I'll have it on a rolling road and injected later this year
