Has anyone fitted a Carbon roof on a MK1 escort.

i have a friend who is buying one for his mk2, keep trying to talk him out of it. my concern is how the fook do you fit it and keep strength in the shell, as the are designed with strength in the roof and also window apertures. each to there own but i wouldn't sacrifice strength for looks.

I think thats is stronger than steel and , the way to go is to glue it , if you look at the Lotus cars/airplanes are also glued together and with rivets.

yes but an escort is welded and not glued,  and lotus cars and planes are designed to be made the way they are. no way i'd take a welded roof off and glue one on. there will be movement in the glue. thats my preference anyway.

It is normally used on escorts with a roll cage,but they are bonded on

Bmw use a bonding on most of their panels and they stay together, can't see a problem bonding a roof skin on.

What is the thickness of the carbon roof , maybe it will be stiffer than the Original roof , it will need a area to glue on maybe 10/15 mm.

About 30 years ago there were also green glue from 3M for some repairs , and that will be more and more , with some BMW`s with some side damage under the doors is the advise when the side panel [plastic] sits good let the damage alone becourse due welding the metal gonna change.

And more and more they use copper solder and less mig welding , and also more and more rivets , looks like shit but thats the way it is.

The glue is so strong these days and less rust , no heat , no leakage , no grinding after the repair.

again they are more modern cars and designed that way. i wouldn't use one.

We visited the JLR factory last year and watched robots assemble F-Types. floor pan just glued to the upper body, and done in seconds.

Quite how you'll repair it if it's 2040 and you're restoring one I don't know.

Fair to say i also do want to weld old cars instead of to glue , the criminal goverments rather have that you buy a new car instead of repair or restore it.

In 2040 it will illegal to fix it , they talk about sustainable but they don`t mean it.. ?

In 2040 I will be very old and more likely to be sat eyeing up 25 - 30 year old girls (whilst wishing I was still young) and worrying about coughing without incontinence problems than I am about whether my car is held together by welds, glue, rivets or sticky back plastic.

Matter of fact, I don't think I am much worried about it now either. Bring on the glue
