Hi & Welcome,

Nice to hear you are taking on a Cortina MK3 restoration, I wish I had kept my Dad,s last MK3 Cortina, I sold it for spares for £100.00, I regret it to this day not keeping it, would be a great reminder of my late Dad, but too late.

Depending what engine/gearbox combination you have in the Cortina, the gearbox should not be too bad to sort, I guess it will be the light duty 4 speed box as fitted to 1300/1600 crossflows, so there should be a few around and not expensive, it would beg the question what is wrong with the original gearbox !!??.

Be nice if you could pop some pictures of it up, any other help needed and there are over a million years of experience here on this site, so you won't struggle to get the car done.

Regards, Al.

Well i was going to put a 5 speed in there as the engine should come back over 100bhp, bit gutted as last year there was loads of boxes on ebay...... just over looked it 🙄

Not a straight swap 4 to 5 speed, different clutch, re-locate gearstick hole in transmission tunnel, gearbox mount and bolt holes on floor pan different, there are 2 different type 9 5 speed boxes, one for a 6 cylinder car & one for a 4 cylinder car, the gearbox ratios of the 6 cylinder will not suit the power/torque output of a crossflow, even a tuned crossflow, you will also require a propshaft to suit the rear of the type 9 and the different length overall, it is an easy enough DIY conversion, but deffo not a quick same day swap.

Welcome to OSF.

Are you sticking with the crossflow in it?

Really? Come on did you not read the intro lol 😂

welcome to OSF might be worth looking at the long first gear conversion for the type 9 also

Not rich.... my dads starting to loose his memory (dont know why) Years ago I stuck a 2.8i in it,  but its just horrible heavy and just not what it was, cant be doing with all the faff of MOT etc

always loved tinkering about with it, yeah its a few quid in the engine rebuild, better than it going to a nursing home 🙄

thought about doing all the things i wanted to do with it when i was 17

got memories i guess of tinkering with on a sunday with my dad and then test drives 😂
