First of all, sorry if this is in the wrong sub-forum.

 

I want an OSF, escort mk 1 or 2 or mabey something bigger like a cortina.

However, I dont have the time to do up the car my self and for some reason I like the idea of a transit (some call me sad, lol) , cheap, big and not as much rust (newer ones anyway).

 

I like both!

It also needs to have the approval of my dad, as he is buying the thing and is favouring the transit because he says I will have less problems with it as it wouldn't be as old.

Insurance is also a major factor :(

I think you should look into what it will cost to insure your chosen steed first. Unfortunately you won't qualify for classic insurance on a mk1 or 2 because of your age. Plus , I don't know what your budget is, but have you checked out lately how much good ones are selling for? Mk5 Cortinas are reasonably cheap to buy still but the smallest is a 1600 so check the insurance for that too.

 

Transit is an interesting choice, but they're pretty big for a first time driver and I suspect you'd soon get fed up with trying to park it as an everyday run around. Also unless you're going for a diesel (which unless it's fairly new will be pretty gutless) the running costs on an older petrol will be pretty high in terms of mpg

 

My call? Not old skool but if you really want a van that has reasonable running costs, look for a mk2 Fiesta 1.6 Diesel.

Wow, i didnt realise a 2.0 capri was as low insurance as that, I didnt consider it as I though it was completely out of my range. Mey i'l have a look at one of those.

i don't think you'll get van insurance untill your 25 so you better check it out :( and don't be tempted to insure anything under someone else name i.e your dad. cos in the long run it won't work out good :(

 

get your self a fessi thats in good order and get it properly insured, i've found that birds arn't interested when you start harpin on about it being a propper car, (don't know why they're just funny like that :? )

 

if i was you though i would get myself a real corker of a mk1 fessi 1100 and make it look like an xr2, you can modded up and as you get older you change the engine upto 1300 then 1600xf propper osf and you'll get loads of respect 8):D

i'd get anything you can for the first year. my isurance halved after that, it was still circa £1000 but like isaid, half of what it was.

i'd have a runaround to rag about and 'practise' in, and get yourself a project car and have it ready for when your 18. :)

 

that'd be my plan, but i also know how easy it is to suggest these things when your onthe outside. good luck anyhow.

go for the tranny. be different. someone i know who's about my age has got one with a few extra seats as his daily. says theyre not actually too bad to insure.

 

 

thats what i'd go for anyway. that way it's right wheel drive and you got summat to lug all your bargain osf bits home in.

i was in the same boat as you and given the choice i probably wouldnt do it again ... i would still have bought this capri but AS a project not as a daily driver you want something CHEAP and tht means cheap to insure cheap to run cheap to replace tyres on etc etc this is what i think im going to do now im gonna save up and buy a cheap runaround and work on the capri next year

Mk1 Fez?Easy to modify and not too dear.

If not,a Mk2 Escort 4 door should do you.

I haven't got a clue about insurance so I don't know if there good suggestions lol

Add the Escort name & it bumps the price up by a fair whack for insurance!

go for a fezza mk1 dude, it's cheap to insure and you can get it running how you want and looking how you want (that's important i imagine) then when that's done you can look at an engine upgrade as age allows. plus, i don't know about anyone else but if my first car was rwd then i would have stuffed it into a tree after a couple of days :D

You will not get insurance on a transit and to be quite honest that's a worrying suggestion. My mum was going to pass her 1970 Land Rover on to me when I passed my test but the insurers were having none of it, the thing is not the fact that its not as quick as most cars its that the size and weight, if you have a prang its going to do a lot of damage to someone else, and as inexperienced driver, that's a high possibility, we've all had our moments.

The Mk5 tina came with a 1300 as a base but its underpowered and hard to find, 1600 at the least but with the size of a cortina its actually the opposite = 2 litre = more economy. Its also economy. I use me mum's corsa while I'm finishing the Anglia & Escort, and even though I only go locally in the evenings it still gets through petrol so stick sub 1600 till you find your feet.

Best way to go is as said, a little fiesta or something, or a 1300 escort and you can't beat it, it will open up some fantastic possibilities ie fiting twin choke, K&N and ashley exhaust to start, lowering it and fitting some cheap laser alloys and you've got a neat budget retro that you can upgrade and fit 1600/ hot 1700/2-litre as you progress and get more experienced driving and insurance allows. Remember though, brake & suspension upgrades always come first, then you'll have a platform to do as much or as little as you want.

actually they are available as a 1300 but they are rare and hideously underpowered :shock:

personally i think you'd be better looking at a MK1 Fiesta if it really has to be old skool

 

you should remember that OSF's cost more to run and maintain that a modern plastic fantastic

 

why not come along to a meet and talk to a few OSF owners about different cars, and maybe ask for a trip round the block too...
