right i have an issue have had for a while now but been tryin 2 sort it out and failing.

my laptop is an acer aspire i bought it over a year ago so has run out of waranty! a mate asked me 2 put music on his ipod for him as his pc wouldnt do it so i told him i would pluged it into my laptop and it has killed my laptop several viruses later and i cleared the crap and used the backup disks to put the pc back to basics but this still hasnt fixed the problem as it comes back to no opperating system errors and windows files missing i have used the backup disks several times and still no go!!!

 

does any1 know if i got a reformat disk if it would sort it or is it send off for fix or scrap any help would be gratefull i have wat i would call a good understanding of pc's and have tryed everything i know but reformating it as i dont have a disk!

i would be gratefull if any1 could give me some help!!!

Ipods are rubbish i had aggro with mine and my computer

 

best thing i ever did was let MK5 stamp on the Ipod with her Stilletoes on

what OS are you using? XP Home as a guess?

 

are you 100% certain that your "back up" discs restore your computer to factory settings?

 

if so you can format your C: drive and start again

 

to do this i think its then type CMD and hit enter

 

in the DOS window that opens type FORMAT C: and hit enter (if this doesn't work boot into safe mode - think you get the option of a DOS prompt there)

 

this should wipe your hard drive clean

 

you then need to go into BIOS/CMOS and set the computer to boot from the CD drive...

 

put your back up disc in the CD drive and reboot...

 

hopefully (but no guarantees) your laptop will work again..

 

IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND ANY OF THE ABOVE DON'T DO IT

don't try this at home - the hard drive is "glass" and shattered!!

O.k mate, unfortunatley you cannot format the hard drive through Windows, it wont let you. What I would suggest doing is a Low Level format as this will get your hard drive to near enough new. (Also called Zero Filling).

 

I have a small program here that will do it, I will have a look to see if it can be e-mailed for you. BTW, have you got a floppy disk drive in that system???? Also, has it been dropped recently????

Yeah, what Jimbob says... There's some small programs that format the hard drive that run from the floppy drive. Then you'll have to boot it from the XP cd and reinstall it again. Make sure you've got XP's Serial number. It's usually on a sticker underneath the laptop.

 

I'm not going to say it... no I'm not... ooooh...... Ok, I am...

 

Failing that, you could always buy a Mac....

unfortunately no floppy drive no never been dropped unless when i sent it off for repairs they did?

sounds like a file missing from windows to me.....have you booted up from the windows disk in disk mode...and gone to repair windows via the cd and go to repair dos mode and input a new bootsector files in has they could have got broken....or do what they say above

yeh the boot disks are the acer ones and there crap i think i need a proper xp 1

if you've tried reinstalling windows and there are still errors - its correct you should try booting from a cd and format/partition the drive and then try again. if it still fails then your having extraction errors (copying data from disc to PC) .

this could be a number of things - tested in this order normall

disks (try copying them on another PC)

memory (if its got 2 sticks in try with just one)

cd drive (not something u can really do at home)

 

shame your not closer mate or id sort it for you
