I do take your point, but as I am sure you will recall the pages and pages of debate we had when one of the Harris Escorts was on e-bay recently and a large number of people were less than positive about the price being asked, claiming it wasn't worth it, they wouldn't pay it, they couldn't see how the car could be worth that money etc etc etc In the end The Harris boys were vindicated when the car sold for more than the starting price on e-bay thus proving the car was worth the money all day long BUT the fact that there was so much debate about this on here and Turbosport was not helpful to the seller and could have put off potential buyers. Why should anyone who puts their car up for sale come under criticism from people who dont know them or the car or really anything about the car. Criticism and commentary that could affect the sale. Is this why Wessie can call any potential purchaser of this car a twat ?

Thanks for the recommendations guys, it is appreciated. As Pete (Anglia66) has said you can just used the prop from a 1200 Anglia, but the second hand price on these is usually around the £30 mark. As for having your 997 one shortened most prop places will charge almost as much to shorten one as they will to make a new one by the time someone has cut it, rewelded it and balanced it its almost as much as a new one. As people say the ones we do are uprated, they are basically a 2.5" tube as opposed to the original 2" shaft, what this does is gives more stability at higher revs which makes for a much smoother drive, the UJ's are uprated and have their own grease nipples in them so they can be regularly maintained so the joints last longer and dont seize up which leads to vibrataion and wear in diff bearings aswell as problems with the gearbox oil seal. There is no problem with the gearbox as they 4 speed box from the cortina is the same number of splines as the original Anglia box. We will turn one round for you in 4 working days and there is a £12 charge for next day delivery. Wayne, out of interest I got the guys who do all my props to run the spec of the standard Anglia shaft through their simulation software to see at what point it all goes bertie.... It came back and said 5200rpm.... just bear that in mind when its whizzin round under your arse I know in the real world you've had it on the car for years with no problem but by modern safety standards for manufacturing thats the point the shaft should start to become unstable and there is a high risk breakage.

So.. following this logic.. Someone who could have worked hard and saved for 20 years to fulfil a childhood dream to go rallying in a Lotus Cortina, sees this car, wants to buy it therefore he is a Twat ? Someone who has perhaps inherited some money from the death of his parents and decides he wants to use some of the money to go historic rallying, is therefore a twat ? Someone who has drummed up some sponsorship, got a team together and wants to go rallying in Historics is therefore a twat ?

If you aint an expert then dont comment... Its better to say nothing and look a bit daft than to post and confirm it I nipped it in the bud because I could see the post going on for pages, as has happened before, where a load of people slagging off someones car saying its not worth whats being asked. Now you have to look at that two ways... Firstly, it could be your car next time that a group of people who dont know it decide to slag off and say you want too much for it, if you were selling that is, OR The person who actually owns the car hears about the forum, joins up, only to find a load of people saying he wants too much for his car. Hardly good for OSF is it... Had you asked 'Lotus Cortina £38,000 whats that all about ?' Then the response would have been different and you would have learnt something along the way...

Thats what I love about this forum... people are quick to comment on the price of things and the value of things they really know very little about. That car is a full blown FIA Rally Car, with FIA, RAC & FIVA papers, aswell as a proven competitive history and has well recongnised names who have restored and prepared the car as well as done the engine on it. And for that kind of motor £35k is CHEAP.... Were it a circuit racer rather than a rally car it would be nearer £45,000

You want the 1.8 from the MGF And its good enough for the Lotus Elise....
-
Yes... the valves wouldnt open fully, thus sapping power, or the top end would rattle like bandit...
-
Thats why we did the 'NOT FOR SALE' stickers.... Wilko on the 105Speed forum had a similar experience, being chased down the A14 by a Mitsubishi Warrior full of pikeys trying to buy his Anglia van.

lift is 0.387 on both inlet and exhaust clearances are 0.014 for inlet and 0.018 on exhaust Would you like the timing aswell ?

Looks like Audi TT, Modern Mustang, Aston Martin are peoples first impressions... NOT That looks just like a MkI Escort !

Get an alternator conversion Smudger... that will get rid of the voltage regulator. Alternatively, fit an earlier loom which pulls it under the dash.
-
It isnt the easiest of things to do get a clean bay. Smudger If you look on the front wheel arches in side the car you will see there is a factory grommet each side, I pulled the wiring back inside the car then ran it out into the inner wings using this factory made hole. Then follow the strut tower and zip tie the wiring up round there, keeps it all away from the suspension. I also got an old Anglia loom and used that to extend some of the wiring to keep all the colours the same, so if you get a wiring diagram for the Anglia it all still reads right, so my oil pressure is still violet and the wire for the starter solonoid is still black/blue etc etc Horn. mount inside the wing off a bumper bracket. Ditch the heater and then use the holes for a breather and washer bottle, keeps everything nice and neat. Its easier if you run side draughts as you can hide all sorts under there. My Coil pack, take off for oil pressure, take off for water temp etc is all under there. You are never going to completely eliminate wires etc as the engine needs them to run put careful routing can make them 'disappear'

Only designed to take a tyre with an inner tube ? Whats all that about ?

That is a great idea. Most of us probably have welders and if you can buy a kit for a fraction of the price of a built one I'm sure most people would go for it. I think you two need to take a bit of a reality check. You just have to look at the sort of 'technical/how to' questions that get asked on here to know that the vast majority dont have the knowledge, ability or access to tools to do even some of the most basic of jobs. Try running a poll and see how many have welders and who can actually weld... I dont mean Pigeon Plop either, I mean a proper weld. I think you will find very few. Lets face it, who would want to lift their bonnet to reveal their nice new strut brace, thats right in your face, thats been all plopped together and hand painted with hammerite ? and then proudly tell the world they'd done it themselves to save £30 Most people want solutions to problems, they want to buy something that has all the parts in the box to do the job and instructions on how to do it. The company that Gary at Retro mentioned earlier does well because they are cheap, no other reason other than they are cheap, so people are prepared to chop and bash things about. There is also a well know exhaust supplier who operates the same sort of policy, its cheap so you have to knock it about a bit to get it to fit. But it doesnt have to be that way, it takes as much time to do a shit job as it takes to do a good one. When we supply something everything is there to do the job, same as Miltons. When we supply an exhaust manifold you get the manifold, a gasket, a set of cap head bolts, an adaptor tube and if its pre-crossflow you get a ball end hex driver to do the cap heads up because thats what you need to get under the carbs. With our alternator kit, everything is there, bolts, belt the lot With out heater vent covers we supply stainless button head bolts and we even supply the allen key to do them up. This is the sort of things we should be asking suppliers for, proper kits that make things easy because for 95% of the people on here its about driving the car and getting out to meets and shows, for the small minority it will be about the build itself, but for most its the driving and enjoying and the more time on the road the better. I dont disagree that people dont want and should be entitled to 'Good Value for money' but there is more to value for money than the price.
-
ive considerd a straight strut brace but i need how it drives when its finished as the front end has been seem welded and ill be running coilovers so i dont want the front end too stiff Milton do a very nice strut brace for the MkI Cortina and its not a fortune either.
-
Yes but its all about open and closed lengths of the shock, aswell as how they mount, ideally you need eyes at both ends. Get it wrong and the shock will just bottom out and the car will handle like pooh
-
What are the Spax you've got ? ie what car have they come from ? Back in the 60's and 70's there was a kit available from Spax that was a set of mounting brackets and a pair of shocks, this lay the shocks back at a 45 degree angle, which was probably better than lever arms but by modern standard is pants. There was also a Koni kit available that worked on a similar principle but used much shorter shocks and had them mounted upright but they used to interfere with the handbrake linkage. A milton rear shock conversion is by far the best way to go as it uses a decent length, readily available shock, mounted in the correct position. BUT.. you have to weld it in place, and if you cant weld, then I suggest you wait a while as there will be a bolt on kit coming from Milton shortly.

I know you say you trust the garage the car is at but I think your wallet would benefit greatly from speaking to someone like Stu at Motorsport Developments up in Blackpool about cossie engines and management, either standard or after market. OR Give Steve Scott a ring at A1 Rally Sport as he may very well have everything you need on the shelf, he doesnt charge the earth, and knows what he's at with Cossie motors, whatever they are in.

What sort of thing would you like for the MkI Cortina ?
-
Shouldnt you have PM'd me the hush hush bit Mike And hopefully the cost break down of the Burton strut brace, as an example, should show that some things just cant be made much cheaper without going to China unless of course this mystery company is 'Burt Quoks Chinese Restraunt and Takeaway of Bradford' And commericially there is no point in getting into a market thats already swamped with stuff, far better to ask the question... What cant you get for your OSF that you would like ? That way the product range available expands rather than just 10 companies all trying to do one product cheeeeepa
-
And that was a car that had all the 'Pub Talk Tuning' bits on it too.. Classic Struts, re-drilled crossmember, van rear springs and lever arms... Was an accident waiting to happen.. and 70 mph, wet road, lost it, slow steering and not enough lock to lock to get it back and up a bank into a lamp post and over she went.... After that I am now a firm believer of when your number is up its up... and not before.. which is how 4 of us walked away from that.
-
Call that a crash ! ? THIS is a crash !! 4 People walked away from that, despite the claret on the head lining.

Mike I am surprised at this coming from someone who runs their own business.. I mean.. if you applied the same logic to your business... I would look at a Thong and say... well that should be 50p with the amount of material thats in it and it could only take 5 minutes to machine up and hardly any materials... but its not 50p is it. Burtons are a re-seller, they have to make a margin, the person who made the item... and I suspect it was Retro Dave as he makes a lot of the Burton Strut Braces, has to buy the materials, employ a fella, rent his unit, pay his business rates, electric etc etc etc oh and make some money for himself. Then the items when made have to be couriered to Burtons, so there is a charge that has to be 'absorbed' into Burtons Cost Price and then they have to make a margin to keep their lights on.... So out of that £80, just how much do you think there is in that for everyone..... ??????? And please.... what the fook is Scene Tax ?
