I know a lot about this subject. I have worked as a fencing contractor to local housing associations for the last 15 years. I work with with people on benefits on a daily basis . I see them all. The ones that are taking the pi55, the ones that struggle and the ones that work but are worse off. It annoys me and it also distresses me. When social welfare and council housing was set up the whole principle was to help people out who were out of work or down on their luck. A council house wasn't a given right ( which people think now) and wasn't meant to be permanent. The biggest problem we face now is that before housing associations and councils , landlords etc used to get paid the rent directly to them from the government. Now the money goes to the tenant and its their responsibility to pay the landlord . Right now think about it... An alcoholic of drug addict or a poor single mum.... what are they going to do now they have an extra £90 a week to collect from the post office ... go to the pub.... get another fix....... pay off the debt collector etc.
Its a scary situation that is making councils etc panic and will cost jobs in time . I am not against people in council houses or on welfare but things have got to change especially attitudes towards welfare and its purpose .
