FlashCadillac Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 my car runs great normally apart from when iv been driving it for a while or high reving it a lot after this the engine stutters and coughs and jolts around a lot like it is struggling for gas the engine isnt getting hot when it does this, the water temp is still in the blue section (im fairly certain the gadge is working as is dose move and go up and down when it should) anyone got any idea what this could be and how to solve it thanks
john_3.0s Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 maybe fuel starvation / evaporation where its getting hot? maybe try and check where your fuel pipes are running and see if they are near anything hot. Is it an electric fuel pump or the normal mech one?
Admin Vista Posted April 20, 2007 Admin Report Posted April 20, 2007 Does sound like fuel starvation, what carb(s) are you running and have you got an inline fuel filter somewhere?
FlashCadillac Posted April 20, 2007 Author Report Posted April 20, 2007 you see.... this is why i dont post very often in the tecnical questions .....i dont have a clue its got a shitty standard single choke 1300XL carb on it... i want a GT webber my car is standars its got on it whatever it came with 35 years ago apart from the ignition... i managed all that
Admin Vista Posted April 20, 2007 Admin Report Posted April 20, 2007 Best take it to someone who can look at it for you then mate as we'd all be taking stabs in the dark at what is wrong.
FlashCadillac Posted April 20, 2007 Author Report Posted April 20, 2007 which webber went on the 1300GTs ?
Admin Vista Posted April 20, 2007 Admin Report Posted April 20, 2007 Sorry mate I've no idea but it should be marked on it somewhere.
john_3.0s Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 dont worry mate we all learn. if it runs ok under "normal" conditions there cant be any major issue. When you have been giving it the beans it will get hot and use more fuel (obviously) so if you have a slightly weak fuel pump or maybe some other restriction in the fuel line (semi-blocked filter etc) it could be starving it from fuel. Its quite a tricky one to diagnose over the net though. Could also be the float level in the carb is to low but it would recover to runing smooth when you ease off the gas almost instantly. It could also be electrical related (but not as likely) sometimes when the coil or consender get warm they play up which will cause problems with your ignition giving you the rough running issue. Personaly I would think its the fuel side. When it starts to run rough and you ease off does it idle and run at low speed OK? or does it take a few mins to sort itself out?
Daveyboy20 Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 Alright matem its worth changing the condensor as they only cost about two quid and literally have one screw and one wire to plug in. Its the little silver cylinder on the side of your dizzy, my cortina was King up a lot and it sounds the same as yours, it'd start and run fine but if i gave it stick or went on a long journey it'd feel like it wasn't getting any fuel. It got so bad in the end it would just cut out and wouldnt start for about an hour!! Get yourself a condensor it'll take you 5 minutes to fit and then fingers crossed. Look in the yellow pages for a local tuner bloke. Thjeres a fella by me with a sierra estate and he does mine and all my mates cars, £30 and he checks everything over and hooks it up to a diagnostic system to get it running spot on. Let me know how the condensor thing goes if you do it
FlashCadillac Posted April 20, 2007 Author Report Posted April 20, 2007 it idles fine but as soon as i touch the gas its spluttering agian, the only thing i find that makes it better is pulling the choke out... obviously putting more fule in the carb
Admin Vista Posted April 20, 2007 Admin Report Posted April 20, 2007 Hmmm now that sounds like it's running too lean?
FlashCadillac Posted April 20, 2007 Author Report Posted April 20, 2007 all the ignition was dont last month.... dont know if you remember reading that when i took it home for winter it just stopped when i got back... that was all ignition, it got a new coil, condensor, leads, points and plugs so i dont think its any of them vista, mine isnt the GT.... i was wondering what DCD the 1300 GT webber is
john_3.0s Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 it idles fine but as soon as i touch the gas its spluttering agian, the only thing i find that makes it better is pulling the choke out... obviously putting more fule in the carb does it do it from cold and under normal temps or only when its hot after a thrash? Also has it always been like it, or only just come on? or has it been getting progressivly worse over time?
Daveyboy20 Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 hmmmmmm the water temp is still in the blue sectio Is the temp always in the blue? have you tried adjusting the mixture screw so it runs a bit richer?
Burns Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 Best take it to someone who can look at it for you then mate as we'd all be taking stabs in the dark at what is wrong. do you realise how hard it is to take a stab in the dark? i couldn't hit my mate when i tried
FlashCadillac Posted April 20, 2007 Author Report Posted April 20, 2007 the car has always done it but sometimes does it more than others, i drove 5 hours from yorkshire to kent the other week and it was fine as there was no traffic yesterday i drove 40mins in traffic from lakeside to rochester and it started doing it before i even got over dartford the cars running temp has changed in the last week it used to run about a third up the gadge but since Boxhill it now runs in the blue all the time... it never leavs the blue section but the needle still moves.
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 Hi mate, I think you may have a co-incidence with your temp gauge, I had exactly the same problems with my Anglia last year, and they only became apparent on the way to a Boxhill meet. I had to do the same trick, "pulling the choke out" for the whole journey there and back. It turned out to be crap in the carburettor which was sucked up from the tank. The reason it idles o.k is because the carb has an idle jet, so it will idle. But I am assuming you may have a blockage in your change over jet - hence the spluttering! The change over jet makes sure there is enough fuel to supply to the engine when it comes off the idle, and onto the main jet. Take the carb apart, those single chokes aren't to bad, give everything... EVERYTHING a good clean, and put an inline fuel filter on your fuel line. Either that, or you may have water in your fuel... have you got a dodgy fuel cap??? I will be down your way on Sunday, if I have time, I could pop in & give you a hand. Oh yeah, your temp gauge maybe reading low due to a stuck thermostat... stuck open that is!!!
capriluke Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 didnt gt's have a 28/36 dcd carb? better for smaller / less tuned engines but harder to get hold of than a 32/36 dgv/dgav
