Jay_harrier Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 I'm probably going to look into getting some sort of bespoke carbon fibre box made to go around the trumpets, with a filter element running the length of the top of it. I can hear my wallet crying at the very mention of the term carbon fibre though I think you should be able to squeeze filters in there, might be worth borrowing one first for a trial fit. If you can, find someone who has an airbox & is dyno proven, the volume, shape & size has been known to have some weird inlet harmonic effect that rob power (mainly at higher revs). This has been seen off inner wings with open bellmouths too. I think K&N used to do their own cold air box. To remove the fire risk on mine, I'm putting in a pukka fire extinguisher system, well worth a couple of hundred quid.
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Vista i reckon K+N's will fit on yours mate , worth a try before making an airbox etc . A Fiat strada Abarth 130tc has a good airbox on it that fits twin dcoes so maybe one of those may be what your looking for . The main problem with fires from the sponge type filters is all the residue/fuel dripping from the bell mouths of the carbs etc , if you clean the filter regular this will lower the fire risk a great deal . If you've got throttle bodies like the nice 100e has then you won't catch fire no where near as easy due to fact they don't store any petrol inside them so don't drip etc

james p Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 mine are like yours vista only on a cross flow i just run em open but im interesed in any sugestions ppl may have
Noodles Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Can you not get a shorter manifold, my dad had to get one for his kit due to lack of space?
rs new boy Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 ive got one of those short manifolds about an inch thick there about a ton from rally design havent got mine fitted up yet but ive got short k&n for them so shouldnt be a problem dont how it will affect performance

Vista, you would get then k&n`s in there no worries if you moved you wiring slightly!!! After all you cant be the only one in the world thats running a WCXM in a Mk1 with sidedraughts!!!! Still sound 100% better with them off tho
Mr Sam Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 apparently the socks can drain upto 20bhp from a tuned pinto i use a filter and take if off for the track however listning to a mate last night (mainly for turbo'd cars this) use filters on turbos for the track think of all that rubber on the track you really dont want that in your valves now do you
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 Vista i've not got this engine anymore so i'll get some measurements from my mates car on saturday , here's a pic without filters for a space referance
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 Here's the same set up with the K+N's fitted , looking at the pics it seems your inlet manifold ends inline with the centre of the dizzy cap the same as mine did
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 Here's an atmo cossie with 48mm jenveys , this is a tricky one to get filters for , i've sent back a few already as i'm not running the motor without them
Admin Vista Posted May 24, 2007 Admin Report Posted May 24, 2007 Vista i've not got this engine anymore so i'll get some measurements from my mates car on saturday , here's a pic without filters for a space referance It looks like you have a similar gap at the end of your trumpets, BUT (and here's where my problem is), your trumpets are 3 times as long as mine to get that gap. My carb ends are much closer to the bulkhead than yours.
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 It's weird because the engine must be in the same place as mine was because a wcxm and a standard one are both supporting the engine in exactly the same position i would have thought or else nothing would fit once the engine was bolted in , i'm confused
Admin Vista Posted May 24, 2007 Admin Report Posted May 24, 2007 I reckon the mounts on my world cup X member are different to yours, look at the difference the rocker cover has at the back in relation to the heater bubble drain hole in these two photos. Mine sits a good two inches further right than yours does. On the plus side that enabled me to fit a 2 1/4" 3 piece manifold without junking the servo
