Paul F Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 Is there not the risk of doing serious damage to the engine when people neglect to put air filters on twin webers etc?
Burns Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 yep, if something gets sucked in really should put mine back on
Admin Mk2Jo Posted May 22, 2007 Admin Report Posted May 22, 2007 Yes, always a danger but I don't run filters on my 48's
mr squidian Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 thank you for this thread! i need to know .. is is majorly risky or alright for just plodding around town etc?
Burns Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 if anything gets sucked down you could royally bugger your engine, it's your choice really...
Admin Vista Posted May 22, 2007 Admin Report Posted May 22, 2007 thank you for this thread!i need to know .. is is majorly risky or alright for just plodding around town etc? It is a risk, but if you compare the suction from the ends of your trumpets with the strength of the airflow underneath the car, most debris will go straight underneath the car. If you think about it, when have you ever opened your airbox to change the filter and actually found anything in it? The only thing you're really at risk from is dust particles being drawn in, these aren't good for your engine either but aren't going to cause catastrophic damage. I have open trumpets, I'd like to fit a nice filter box but as I only have about 2" - 3" of space, even socks is a squeeze and I'm equally unkeen on them so I choose (reluctantly) to go without. I must take another pic now I've finished off all the loose ends,
ZetecVan 2.0 Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 It's risky. I had a piece of loom tape sucked into my throttlebodies a few weeks ago.
J_mk1 Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 If space permits you should i say! you can always take them off for shows and races and stuff
petrolhead01 Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 as nice as my car sounds without the filters on i defiantly advise against running without!! the trend of having a lowered old skool ford adds to the problem because any airborne debris kicked up from the car in front, (lets face it we have all been behind the inpatient asshole who just cant wait for the guy turning right to get out of the way and sprays all the crap from the centre of the road straight at the front of your car) from on-coming traffic or ever just strong wind could quite easily be drawn into your carbs/throttle bodies with disastrous consequences , you may only end up needing to grind the valves in prematurely due to shit getting sucked in or it could be a lot worse!!!! but again it comes down to person views!!!! i for one dont want to endanger my bloody expensive engine just for the sake of struggling to fit my socks on properly!!! but hey thats just me!!!
Admin Vista Posted May 22, 2007 Admin Report Posted May 22, 2007 i for one dont want to endanger my bloody expensive engine just for the sake of struggling to fit my socks on properly!!! Side drafts spit, even the best set up ones do this from time to time and petrol soaked socks burn like a good un, that's my real worry about them.
oliwally Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 Had A Piper Cross Foam Filter On The Capri For About 4 Months Before The Carb Packed Up,So Decided That I Cant Wait To Fit My 45's Or Afford To Get Another Carb. When I Took The Old Filter Off The Filter Was Almost Completely Burnt Away. The Socks I Had Fitted On The 45's Started To Smolder A Couple Of Days After Fitting Them So They Went Into The Bin.
Paul F Posted May 22, 2007 Author Report Posted May 22, 2007 So the general consensus is... if you've got space to fit filters do so. Don't bother with socks as they can overheat. Although carbs without filters sound awesome... Cool thanks guys!

Guest MK1gaz Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 Fit k+n air filters on dcoes not the spongy types as k+n's don't burn as easily when the carbs spit back + backfire . Your mad running without filters because all the dust + shit is like grinding paste down your bores especially at dusty car shows in the middle of a field !!!!!!!!! If you suck in a small stone it's bye , bye engine as well . When fitting air filters just make sure that the end of the trumpet is not too close to the lid of the filter epecially those pipercross sock things as this will cost you power . I've tested K+n's on several of my cars etc on the rolling road and the power stayed the same as when the trumpets were left open so i'd use them

Side drafts spit, even the best set up ones do this from time to time and petrol soaked socks burn like a good un, that's my real worry about them. I lost a Grp 1 kitted RS2000 to fire. 44 IDF's spitting into ITG foam filters. I hadn't set the points that week, pulled into a petrol station & woof up it went. I'd still run filters especially if you've spent a few quid on an engine, better still a cold air box as you're robbing your engine of power by sucking in warm air. It only takes a stray bit of debris & you'll write off a piston, head & block if you're unlucky. As Gaz said K&N's, proven to provide as much flow as open bellmouths.

I hear you all, but look at the pic, how am I gonna fit anything in the space I have. I've been round this and ended up with Pipercross socks on my last engine.
Burns Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 i recall seeing something resembling wire mesh over somebody's trupmets to keep out any big pieces of crap, might be looking into
Arched Escy Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 i recall seeing something resembling wire mesh over somebody's trupmets to keep out any big pieces of crap, might be looking into Theres some of them in Demon Tweeks catologue!
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 The dust will get through the mesh and the mesh will lose you power normally . A pic for vista of my old pinto with K+n's on so you know that they will fit ok
Paul F Posted May 22, 2007 Author Report Posted May 22, 2007 I remember seeing those mesh trumpets in a mag a while ago and thinking that's not even going to remotely help to stop small particles getting inside!
Noodles Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 I know someone who had some foam filters and lost them, they went inside the carb!!!!
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 My mate had a car actually suck the mesh into the trumpets whilst on a dyno run , luckly it got stuck in the carb and as saved the engine . If anyone is running pipercross type "sock" filters it's definatley worth switching to k+n's especially on a heavily tuned motor as the power will go up and the amount of fires go down !!!!!!!!
petrolhead01 Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 i have got itg socks and that is all that will fit so i suppose i will also have to risk a fire!! still rather risk that than a foreign object getting in the engine and totally King it!!
caprixpack Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 when i had my 3.1S capri that was running tripple webbers, it had a pipercross foam filter and that ended up burning, as the carbs spat like bitches but would deffo run with filters specially with 3 webber DCNF 42s sucking
Admin Vista Posted May 23, 2007 Admin Report Posted May 23, 2007 i have got itg socks and that is all that will fit so i suppose i will also have to risk a fire!! still rather risk that than a foreign object getting in the engine and totally fooking it!! Though I too would prefer some method of filtration, I think the risk of fire destroying my car is more likely than the risk of a stone being drawn into my engine. It's also a lot more expensive to fix, compare the cost of a full car rebuild (likely including engine) after a fire to the cost of an engine rebuild after Foreign Object Damage. The dust will get through the mesh and the mesh will lose you power normally . A pic for vista of my old pinto with K+n's on so you know that they will fit ok I'd say you have quite a bit more space there than I have. my world cup X member kicks the engine further over to the left than usual and I think my inlet manifold is a bit longer too. Take a look I'm probably going to look into getting some sort of bespoke carbon fibre box made to go around the trumpets, with a filter element running the length of the top of it. I can hear my wallet crying at the very mention of the term carbon fibre though
