Hi all, the only thing that is stopping me getting my car back on the road is the cuffin gearbox mount! I have just converted my Capri from a 4 speed to a 5 speed type-9 and gearbox mount it well off!!! Anyone any ideas as to what i need???

Thanks

if its similar to mk2 escorts just weld soime 2x1 tubing on to the bracket and bolt it through the floor pans it might sound bodgy but 1 it works and 2 alot of people do it either temporally or just leave it like that

all depends on how concours you want it

As said, extend the brackets back similar to this, this is how it looks under my mk1 escort, but my mk1 3 litre capri was achieved in an almost identical fashion

Why not cut the original mount, and weld them further back.

By mount we mean the crossmember that is secured to the gearbox, I'm assuming you're meaning the mounting points in the tunnel? I have seen this done but to be honest it's easier just to extend the brackets or as Tom suggested, drill through the floor yeeeeehaw!

If yer gonna go wild west and go though the floor might be an idea to strengthen were mounts bolt I sandwiched the floor between some thick steel. But it all depends how neat you want the job.

Practicality before prettiness  .

Just watch the reduced ground clearance or you could well snap the mounting boss off the tail end of your gearbox :oops:

It's not that it's not pretty it's more that the floor doesn't have much strength in that plane unless you reinforce it.

Got ya  Mines got a plate on the inside and the outside to beef it up. Like I say, it broke the box rather than the mount when I grounded it out so itseems ok.

In all fairness,it was suppose to be temporary just to get the car up and running (I wouldnt weld when I put in the pinto so had to make it a total bolt-in job) but works well enough that I cant be bothered to change it

If I was to do it again then I would weld in new mounts. If only for the extra clearance and to save scrabbling around under the carpet to hold the bolts when dropping the gearbox out.

My bolts were welded and flushed so nothing pokes out inside

Ive only just regained the courage to go anywhere near my car a welder :(

Will have to Splodge the bolts next time the carpet is up.

This method is the neatest, extending the mounts with tube doesn't look mechanically sound as you've just added a lever into the mix. Although bolting through the floor sounds cowboy, if you weld a thickener plate with captive nuts on the inside then this is would be ok too.

Best option is to move/buy/make mounts & weld them in the correct position.

you're right but, to be fair, there isn't a great deal of weight pulling down on the floor. Some big (and i mean big) washers will be just fine.

i don't think its a cowboy way of doing it, just easier if you can't weld or are working on your back with a jack and a rope

I bought some angle iron, welded it to the existing mount to extend the reach and drilled the angle iron in line with the existing gearbox mount holes. Been there 3 years now and it ain't fallen off yet.

The proper option is to grind off the existing mount move them back to line up with the gbox and re-weld them back.

Choice is yours mate

cant you unpick the proper mounts from the right car bolt them in place and weld them to the inside of the tunnel ??
