mk2escortmad Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 hi there, im buying a mk2 escort manual and got to change it to an auto (cuz im disabled) so could anyone tell me if its REALLY hard to convert it and roughly how long it will take. A friend of mine has got some auto parts anyway so sourcing the parts isnt hard cheeRS kyle
james p Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 never done the conversion but youll deff need to weld in a bigger tunnel
Rick Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 cant say mant have done such a conversion its usually the other way round i thihnk all you need really is the bigger tunnel and gearbox mounts. not sure about pedal box? :-S
james p Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 and the final drive bearing in the engine is diffrent i think
john_3.0s Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 do the escorts have a oil cooler in the rad like the granadas do for the tranmisssion fliud? if so you will need a rad from an auto. might be easier finding a auto capri if you wanna keep is old skool
Admin Vista Posted June 27, 2007 Admin Report Posted June 27, 2007 and the final drive bearing in the engine is diffrent i think Though I don't know for sure, I doubt it. If people can convert autos to manuals without an engine change then logic dictates the reverse should be the same. Biggest bit of the job will be welding in the larger tunnel Kyle.
V8ian Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Could be worth a couple of calls to the escort breakers, I'm sure, they will have all the relevant pieces they have removed for manual conversions. Speak to them nicely, tell them of your predicament and they may be generous.
bomber1 Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 think escort tec was selling an auto tunnel at cf show
Retromotorsport Posted June 28, 2007 Report Posted June 28, 2007 Best way to do this conversion is to get a Sierra auto .. the tunnel will need to be bigger than the standard Auto tunnel but any of the aftermarket rally type tunnels will do. You can use the auto tunnle but it will need some bashing and flexing. we did this conversion to a mk1 .. the autobox in the sierra is better as it has a 4th gear .. You will need to fit an oil cooler though, which is easy enough as the pipes are not under pressure. I made a simple bracket to take the sierra center consul and shifter .. We used everything from the sierra including the engine as this was an Injection 2.0l pinto. A competant Garage could do this conversion in a couple of days .. we did it as part of an Overhaul Project to this car .......... for more details view the thread http://www.turbosport.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=213 This conversion made a really lively car thats nice to drive, Power and torque are up on the x-flow auots so it can hold its own in traffic today, away from the lights etc as the older x-flows do struggle a bit being 1600cc autos. And along the motorway the engine is cruising as the gears and power means you can use a lower diff than the standard autos used. If you use standard Escort Auto parts its fairly easy Auto tunnel and mount auto box shifter lever and its consul some boxes had coolers some didnt .. depending on what type you can source new rads for them or fit an oil cooler in the Trans coolers place Change the diff to a 4.1 This is an easy weekend conversion for a competant mechanic/welder.
lee_capri Posted June 28, 2007 Report Posted June 28, 2007 hi their mate you will need a big tunel for the gear-box you will also need a auto prop poss as one is longer than the other but you might get away with it as the auto props are a tage longer, you will need the auto rad as well and pedal box, engine is no diff as i have used autos in manurals and vice versa, if you are going for a doner vicheal make sure it as a cabel speedo as lots of later stuff(mk3 grannys ect) are remote speedo's, also on mk2 escort is the brake servo on the bulk-head you will poss need the one that sits up by the rad, i my-self would by the auto if thats what i need or source a rotten one to strip, have done a few and they are a asberlute paine as you end up changing nearly everthing. but thats up to you good luck with that :)just read previous im pretty sure you can bolt the 2.0pinto to the 1.6cross flow box but you would need the tourke converter for cross flow and matching stuff as bolt-holes as i remember are the same does any-body no differance
