I'm looking for an old escort or anglia van for the business for which we can show off our wares and also use on a daily basis.

I'm thinking of putting in a modern(ish) diesel engine as it will be an everyday delivery vehicle so it needs to be economical and it'll also be a bit different.

I'm not dead set on this idea yet, just thinking about it. I know there are OSF diesels on the continent but none (that I no of anyway) overhere.

What suggestions do you have for an engine then???

There was a Modena green Mk1 Capri diesel at a CCI show I attended in about 97 so it's definitely been done.

Think from memory it was a 1.8 diesel lump but no idea if it was a turbo lump or not

Use a P100 diesel if you're on a budget

Saw a Daytona Yellow mk1 Capper sold thru

Affordable Classics a few years ago running one 8)

Or if money's no object... fit a Duratorq

Read an article in CF (I think) a while back,

not many been done :D

A nice 100E .. converted into a Van, with a 1.8 turbo diesel from a Sierra..

Front end converted over to Escort Geometry ... ie turrets moved in ..

That would make the dogs danglies of a van ... reckon a mk2 estate back end would fit with some fettling, bit of cutting here.. bit there, infill to join the shapes in.. linish fill and paint ..

I know and I'm still waiting on the piccies I asked you for mate :D

Thanks for the positive feedback fella's.

I was chatting with Neil from NTS last night to see if he knew of a van going (because I know he has one that he has'nt done anything with yet :D ) and he suggested the P100 set up as its already been set up for RWD, as someone has also said on this post.

I'll be honest though, I'm torn between doing the diesel or another YBT as I luv 'em and I did'nt do the conversion on the Capri. I always wanted to do it myself but at the time thought that if I started it would take too long and I would/might lose interest, now the business is doing well I can afford to take the time off and get stuck in myself.

It feels like having an itch you just can't reach :?

THERE was a mk1 tina on ebay once wit a sierra 1.8 td in it that would b the most popular choice i reckon one u can pick em up 2 a penny and theyre fooking cheap n easy 2 do

Posted

you can pick up a mondy td for a few hundred quid...

ive always wanted to do this, but dont have the space or equipment to experiment..

had a couple of mondeo 1800 TDs and believe me you will be nothing but dissapointed with the performance. the TDs are 85 odd bhp standard, no low down power and very laggy and just gutless. There are one or two things you can do like remove the throttle damper, tweek up the injector and increase the boost pressure a bit but they are still essentially gutless! (been there done that)

the newer tdis (duratorque TDDi and TDCi) are in a whole new league but will need a lot more electronics to transplant.

I guess the weight of an escort van would be alot less than a mondy so peformance should be better and it would be economic and v.reliable as those lumps are pretty bullet proof. If your not bothered about performance then go for it as you will have a decent usable van

Jon, dont discount the old 1.8td.

TD's with a mechanical pump (not electric like on a tdi) are very easy to tune! And becuase theres no ecu, electronics or high presure fuel rails, they are easy and cheap to fit.

Ive got a pre-TDI, Td in my '96 Passat with only 75bhp as standard (read gutless!), which is basically very similar to a Ford 1.8td. After some simple mods to the fueling and boost presures my car is every bit as quick as a 90bhp TDI. Cost? Nothing, You just need to fiddle with the waste gate and fuel screws! Fit a large intercooler, and a better exhaust and you can end up with quite a rapid old diesel, WITHOUT any complicated electronics or ECU's.

A 1.8td with similar mods in a escort or anglia would make for quite lively performance.

Have you seen under the bonnet of a modern common rail diesel? The transplant would be very tricky due to the ammout of plumbing for not only the turbo, but the vacumm systems, EGR and fuel lines Then you need to consider the immobilisers which on virtually all modern diesels are coded into the key, ignition reader coil, instrument pods, conveniance control units and the injector pumps!

You could consider one of the Izuzu TD use in many mid '90 vauxhalls. again these are quite easy to tune but are a bit more advanced than the ford 1.8, without being as complex as a common rail. Good thing about these is they are easy to convert to RWD using a Manta Gearbox or a XE style bellhousing to type9.

Last thing why bother with a diesel? We all know how to fit a pinto dont we?

Fit a pinto and LPG conversion, with LPG at half the price of petrol, a pinto will effectivly do 40-50 MPG!

...hmmm , anyone seen a YB with LPG?

i'm still unconvinced by lpg. you lose power for one and if you're running something with a bit of poke that needs the added octanes of super unleaded, you could end up doing some serious damage to your engine, ie detonation or pinking or something caused by, in effect, running too lean.

i was actually thinking of putting a 1.8td in my cortina but then sambo said he'd never speak to me again if I did...

another thing that would lively up the performance of the p100 motor would be a severely lightened/skeleton flywheel. it'd certainly help make best use of the power you *have* got.

Seen capris Mk1/2 and cortina Mk1/3/4/5 and P100 with the sierra TD conversion, they use the type 9 so gearbox is an easy job, in a cortina the engine goes in with reversed pinto mounts apparently  not sure if the same would be true on an escort :?

you can tuine em a bit, mondeo forums are good places to find tuining tips on the early non ECU 1.8 TD

yeah your right about power loss, Ive read somewhere that you raise the engines compression ratio to counter act theproblem??

Sorry if Ive misled you fella's or gave you the wrong impression but if I did end up with it being diesel powered I'd leave it well alone with standard power.

I mentioned the YB simply coz I do luv em, IMO there the daddy and even a standard cossie at 200bhp would be more than enough for a delivery van

I was also thinking about the van being the guineapig for my other future projects which is another reason why I thought of the YB.

Keep the idea's coming though. I know there's a lad on TS (he was also in last months CF) who is fitting the new duratec engine on throttle bodies in his mk1 and I'm following his build as the diesel engine version of that engine will (I presume) be of a similar size and will need similar mods to get it to fit. And as for the ECU and management I'm sure I could get Clint to sort that out for me
