sambo Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Just got my new exhaust manifold delivered today (woopee!!) It probably wont fit as its an ashley one! but i was wondering what the best thing is to use to coat it i.e just high temp paint? Or do people just leave their manifolds naked as they just rust like mad anyway!? I have the manifold wrap on my pinto exhaust at the moment but apparently they really badly rot the manifold someone said?? cheers!
Admin Vista Posted July 16, 2007 Admin Report Posted July 16, 2007 Cermakrome, it's expensive but it's the dogs doodas. Reduces underbonnet heat drastically and prevents corrosion. http://www.camcoat.u-net.com/index.htm The contact there is Peter Carter, very helpful and and can answer any questions you need
Fiesta Steve Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 The problem with that expensive coating is for the cost of the Ashley manifold and the coating you could get a proper custom manifold built that a) Will fit perfectly and will actually find you more power and torque, and surely thats the whole point of fitting an n/a yb engine in the first place. Nothing wrong with the coating, I just wouldn't spend that sort of money coating an ashly manifold.

sambo Posted July 16, 2007 Author Report Posted July 16, 2007 How much does it cost??!! I think i may just spray it with HT paint..

Good point, but whilst the coating was more expensive than paint, I've couldn't find a decent custom manifold that was anywhere close to being as cheap as this package was AND have all the heat insulating properties of a metalised ceramic coating. How much does a good a custom stainless manifold cost? Plus, all the evidence I had from reputable sources was that the Ashley 3 piece manifold was a damn good manifold for the money and that you could spend significantly more without seeing huge improvements for your extra cash.
BaileyMex Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 On a budget note Use Hammerite BBQ Paint, supposed to work

A custom manifold in stainless will cost from around £300. How much is the coating exactly ? I know its not cheap but looks good quailty. I don't know what a 3 piece manifold is so can't comment on them, I only go by primary pipe diameter and length. As you say, if they are half decent you could pay a lot more for little gain.
Admin Vista Posted July 16, 2007 Admin Report Posted July 16, 2007 The manifold and coating owes me a little over £300. My manifold was new but I got it cheap at around £100, I think typically they go for around £150. £300 sounds cheap for a custom manifold I was quoted significantly more than that by my local long life centre. I had assumed that something like a Tony Law manifold would be more than double the £300 odd mine cost me.
Guest MK1gaz Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 I was going to get my manifold cam-coated by it's very expensive and as the place is near Leeds you need to trust royal mail/couriers not to lose or bend your new exhaust Also if your manifold has seperate pieces then the coating could stop these parts fitting/sliding back together again afterwards . I just sprayed mine myself with Halfords high temp paint instead which cost £10 for 2 cans . My mate sprayed his with it last year and it still looks good today . It's not as good as a proper coating of course but much less grief and my manifolds not got lost or crushed by a van !!!!!!!!!! .
noz aint cheating Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 I would have got rid of that big ugly master cylinder as soon as i purchased the car, you could save a couple of pounds if that was off. Thats if you wanted to! I used some heat resistant paint from burtons on mine, done the trick and now it doesnt have that rusted look.
Retromotorsport Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 ok .. advantages the coating will prolong exhaust life (one car i know still looks good after many years) the ambient air temp under the bonnet is dropped (by more than wrap) the gas speed is increased average cost for a 3 layer coating (inside and out with cermachrome on the outside) is around £150 the cost of wrapping is comming down as more and more people are coating instead . But your still looking at 30-50 quid a year .. 3 years and you are now spending more than the cost of a coating .. and you manifold is probably rotton too.. so new wrap for the new manifold. disadvantage ... ermmm ermm nope cant think of one .. oh and they do it it different colours too .. As for the sending of a manifold .. couple of quid insurance from Royal Mail and its safe as houses.

It works, there's space for it, I didn't have to spend silly money on a bias pedal box I don't need? Oh yeah to save a few grammes for drag racing

At those prices, its well worth considering Cost me more than that, it was about £220 for a three coat system on a 3 piece tubular pinto manifold. Though that price included carriage back to me.
