Seals2 Posted July 21, 2007 Report Posted July 21, 2007 hi every1. i was trying to get a lil work done to my car 2day but as usall the rain came and i had 2pull the cover out again. but i have notice a few patches where its a slight rusty but i dont know how strong it is.? i gave it a bang with a hammer and it seemed ok. i was thinking of getting the car acid dip but is it really worth it? does any one know how much it would cost for a mk2 escort shell inc vat?
Supercharged Nat Posted July 21, 2007 Report Posted July 21, 2007 Hi, there was an article in retro ford mag a few months ago. it was about 800 to dip the shell, boot lid, bonnet and doors. (cant remember if that included vat or not tho). if your doing an immaculate rebuild/ retore then its gota be worth it, as every single bit of rust is taken out, leaving a completely bare shell. then you can weld up and dodgy bits and be safe in the knowledge that you have completely rust proofed the chassis rails and nooks etc. but obviously if youve just got a couple of patches you wanna do then its not worth it, as everything has to come off the car, all running gear and every nut bolt, piece of trim and glass etc.
Seals2 Posted July 21, 2007 Author Report Posted July 21, 2007 yeah i remembered seeing it but couldnt remember how much it was. im going 4 the complete restore as i cant be arsed in a few years to pul things out and weld a small bit here and there. most of the car is bare so theres not much to strip thats wat made me think about doin. cheers for the advice dude.
Nettles Posted July 22, 2007 Report Posted July 22, 2007 Does anyone know if there are any dipping companies based in the southeast area? Thinking about dipping my Anglia because it’s less harsh than having it blasted. I'm located in Kent and it would be great if I didn’t have to trailer it for hundreds of miles to get the job done.
mossy Posted July 22, 2007 Report Posted July 22, 2007 I wouldnt mind travelling to have it done... Who does this, ive googled it but all i get is spam.
Seals2 Posted July 23, 2007 Author Report Posted July 23, 2007 the people im looking at are surfaceprocess.co.uk. the bookin starting at nov 07 and they have the car between 21 to 28days. i live south east as well so it is a long way bud.
Dalek Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 Here is the proper URL http://www.surfaceprocessing.co.uk/
4parajon Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 I spoke to Surface Processing yesterday. If you have a vehicle and it is available and stripped NOW they can do it over the next week or so (thats stripping only) if not they are taking bookings now for November, thats how busy they are. They quoted me £650 + VAT = £763.75 and that was for a mk2 Escort van Ive looked and I can't find anyone else that does car acid dipping, I'm currently looking at Soda Blasting (do not confuse this process with sand blasting), I'm waiting on a price but you can take it to them or they can come and do it at yours......it looks a messy process though.
Wessie Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 i want the anglia dipped, but im scared i wont have a car left
mossy Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 i want the anglia dipped, but im scared i wont have a car left Im thinking the same!
lee 1 Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 Not sure if this is right but i was told by prepfab not to have a shell dipped if it's going to be a road car as it will remove every last trace of paint and seemsealer. Now this would leave a few area's that you are never going to be able to get paint on very vunerable to the old tin worm.As i say could be wrong but worth considering. They allso said they don't worry about that when building a rally shell as they only have a life expectancy of 3 years
Wessie Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 They allso said they don't worry about that when building a rally shell as they only have a life expectancy of 3 years i thought most of the concours cars were acid dipped in order to start with, i suppose as long as you get a top quality sprayer who can get in to all the awkward bits then you should be fine
Burns Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 i believe in the retro ford article, the car was coated after it came out of the dipping in order to protect all of the little bits from the elements?
sambo Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 Yes, after the car was dipped, it was dipped in a coating solution that literally gets into every nook and cranny. That way the whole shell is 100% protected and would last another 30 years etc. The coating process is at an extra cost but its ten times better than paint and waxoyl etc i believe?

mossy Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 yeah ive been reading up on it, they acid dip it and then dip it in a protective solution then primer, then the solution and then the primer again....leaving you with nice funky fresh metal!
mossy Posted July 26, 2007 Report Posted July 26, 2007 heres the quotes i got from surface processing... ' Many thanks for your enquiry. Our costs to process your Mk II Escort would be as follows: To chemically clean the bodyshell and panelwork £695.00 + VAT We can also offer a priming service as follows: To zinc phosphate and electrophoretic coat (immersion primer) – Recommended £775.00 + VAT 816 + 911 = £1727 For dipping and primer!
sambo Posted July 26, 2007 Report Posted July 26, 2007 Well, if your gonna do it..............you may as well do it properly! Actually it's not as much as i thought it would be! Think about it, although the costs wont stop there as any rot will have to be repaired, the shell will be better than factory fresh man!! And sooo well protected for years and years. Sounds good to me.
Rick Posted July 26, 2007 Report Posted July 26, 2007 s'lot of money that. good if you can afford it though
Richierich Posted July 26, 2007 Report Posted July 26, 2007 Would be awesome to have a car that didn't rust, the way I read it tho you have to have it dipped to find all the rust holes, then repair the holes, then dip it again, then get it e coated to protect it all! That would make it over 2 grand! But guess it would be worth it in the long term!
