on my main pc i have windows vista the pc is only 4mth old but somehow vista has managed to lose the DVD drive i've tried updating drivers and software etc but it comes up saying

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

i've clicked on check for solutions numerous times and it just says no solution found.

i've also tried uninstalling the dvd drive and rebooting so it automatically installs itself but its still not working can any of you shed any light or is it just cos vista's a load of garbage never had these problems on xp.

Cheers in advance Mart

My dad had to get a new PC so got one with Vista on. Unfortunately his nice photo printer/scanner isn't compatible so had to buy a new one.

My advice... Get a Mac...

Very common problem on Vista and XP. There is info on this problem here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060

This is for XP, but it is supposed to work in Vista as well. I have had no need to try it as I have never experienced this particular problem. If in doubt, back up any saved data, and restore your system... either that, or do what O_H_C says and take it back

Hope this info helps

sounds like your registry is corrupted to me, in Win 98, the Registry was pretty easy to edit, but I've never edited an XP or Vista Registry Entry so can't shed much light, however if it is a registry problem it may be as simple as finding out (from the computer/DVD Drive manufacturer) what the regisrty entry should be and see if yours matches. If it doesn't you'll need to edit the regisrty entry by hand.

have you checked to see if the DVD Drive is listed in the Devices in Set Up when you boot up?
